An interview with Jonni Hertel, the 2023 Crazy Horse Memorial® Educator of the Year, is now live on the Foundation’s YouTube page! Jonni was given the award during the annual Native Americans’ Day celebration at Crazy Horse Memorial® and she is the 20th educator of be honored by the Memorial in this way. She teaches 3rd grade in the Rapid City Area Schools and is a citizen of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe.

As part of receiving the award, Jonni was able to select an organization to receive $1,000 and she chose Rural America Initiatives of Rapid City, South Dakota.

This Friday, January 19, is the deadline for artists to apply to participate in Cultural Programs at Crazy Horse Memorial!

Applications are open for Native artists from across North America. A wide array of programs are hosted and all art forms are welcome to apply.

Programming takes place May-October and almost all programs provide participating artists with a stipend, travel assistance, lodging, meals, and an opportunity to showcase and sell artwork. The Call to Artists for Cultural Programs at Crazy Horse Memorial® closes January 19, 2024! Crazy Horse Memorial welcomes artists, storytellers, musicians, and writers who are committed to showcasing their arts and sharing their cultures with an international audience. Programming months are May, June, July, August, September, and October.

Mike Lammers (Oglala Lakota) spent the first week of October in the Living Treasures program here at the Memorial. In this program, visitors to the Cultural Center took a few moments to prep imitation eagle feathers while Mike spoke about the cultural significance of eagle feathers, personal adornment, and powwow etiquette. All of the visitor-prepped imitation feathers stayed with Mike, and he began constructing a children's bustle during the week. The bustle was completed in the weeks following the program.

The finished product, pictured here, contains materials such as brain-tanned leather, coyote fur, buffalo fur, prairie chicken and turkey feathers, horsehair, plant fiber, and trade cloth.
