Message from the 2023 President of the High Springs Historical Society, Don Decker:

February 6th, 2023

Hello everyone,
I am sending this note to introduce myself to our community of High Springs and our surrounding area and the state of Florida.

I’ve been involved with the High Springs Historical Society Inc and train museum for a few years. I have enjoyed meeting people and spending time in the museum and learning about the history of how the railroad, specifically the Atlantic Coast line Railroad formed by Henry Plant was the major part of forming and growing what is High Springs. The railroad had an enormous maintenance yard to service many steam engines and train cars for 100 years.
Some of the things that I’ll be working on as President is to bring awareness of the Historical Society and planning activities such as family day on specific Saturdays that we’ll have with some surprises for kids.
Pioneer Days in April we will have an additional room with model trains running and a table outside to greet people to our museum and have our newly designed T shirts. Other things we will have are guest speakers to talk about the railroads, the springs and other topics about local history and education. We will also have fundraisers and many activities we will be involved with.
To accomplish these things, I need your help to come and join us to volunteer for our activities and become a member of our Historical Society.
Our next members meeting is February 7th at 7PM, and future meetings will be on the first Tuesday of the month at the old school building behind city hall in High Springs. We will also have covered dish fellowships every quarter, the next one in March. I hope to see and meet you.
Also, we can use your financial help. Donations are gratefully accepted.
