Our friends at the Clark County Museum Guild have been digging into the story of Eddie LaRue, a longtime Las Vegas private investigator whose remarkable career intersected with some familiar names, colorful characters and enduring legends from the city’s past.

The result is a fascinating bit of detective work about a detective — and another reminder that some of Southern Nevada’s best stories are still waiting to be uncovered.

On August 25, 1965, a remarkable scene played out in downtown Las Vegas: crowds lined up outside the Marriage License Bureau, Clark County courthouse, and the office of the Justice of the Peace. The reason? A wedding rush, as couples hurried to tie the knot before young men were drafted to serve in the Vietnam War.
This moment in Las Vegas history captures the spirit, urgency, and resilience of a generation facing uncertain times. The courthouse steps became a crossroads of love and duty, forever linking the city’s famed wedding industry to the stories of those who hoped to change their fate.

On August 20, 1964, Beatlemania swept Las Vegas as John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr performed two iconic concerts in the rotunda of the Las Vegas Convention Center, hosted by the Sahara Hotel. This electrifying moment in local history is now featured in the Howard W. Cannon Aviation Museum’s new exhibit, “Celebrity Arrivals in the Neon Gateway.”

This joint project between the Howard W. Cannon Aviation Museum and the LVCVA Archive spotlights rare images of legendary stars as they touched down in Las Vegas. The golden age of air travel—from 1950 to 1970—mirrored Las Vegas’s rise as a world-class destination, with music legends, film icons, and sports heroes all converging in the desert oasis.

On August 19th, 1926, William Roberts sent this letter to Anna Roberts Parks regarding the division of their property following their divorce. Soon after the divorce, Anna Roberts Parks opened Palm Funeral Home, later Palm Mortuary, so it is significant that William offers Anna the “undertaking property” in this letter. William also mentions that the rent from rooms associated with the property will no doubt go up “if the dam comes,” referring to the future Hoover Dam. Letters like this, which may seem insignificant at the time of writing, can become truly unique historic records, and the museum is lucky to have the letter in its collection. Here is a transcription of the letter. Oh, and if someone can figure out what the word starting with “M” at the bottom of the first page is, please let us know.

“Vegas 8-19-26

Dear Anna,
Just a bus proposition. I heard for several that you would rather had the undertaking property than the Arcade property if you want to trade I will do this you assume what’s against my place & I assume what’s against yours. You give me 2000, for every thing upstairs & down & I will take my hat & go. You would have the undertaking bus all Book accts & bring your hearse here & have a nice place for Marsiling [?}. Rooms all rented & are good for twice what the arcade rents for & if the Dam comes one will advance as much as the other. This is only a suggestion you can do

as you please. As this is all the paper I have will write on both sides. The girls are begging me to come to Fresno & they have offered me a good light job in the parlors & on acct of my Eyes & nervousness can’t follow undertaking much longer & will sell this or trade for Income property in Calif. If your interested let some one act for you quick.

On August 13-16, 1956, agents Leo Kuykendall and Al Stewart, of the FBI office in Las Vegas, held a “police school” for Clark County law enforcement agencies. The class, held at the newly opened Henderson pistol range, included general fi****ms instruction, an investigation of a fake crime scene, and other law enforcement procedures. These photos show the attendees in action.

Extra information, if interested: The instructors were long-time law enforcement agents. Kuykendall was an FBI agent for 21 years, serving two years as an instructor at the FBI Academy before he became Las Vegas Chief of Police. W. Albert Stewart, Jr. was an FBI agent in the San Diego Office, the Salt Lake City Office, and the Las Vegas Office before becoming a lawyer in the 1960s.

Zombies took over the Palms on June 18, 2005, for the CineVegas film festival premiere of George A. Romero’s Land of the Dead at the Brendan Theater. Longtime local Laura Velgos portrayed one of the living dead for the event.
