Every time I'm given the opportunity to create a portrait for someone it is truly a beautiful moment. Not only for them but for me as well. A common saying I would hear growing up is that a picture says a thousand words. That saying always stuck with me.

Well,
imagine spending hours looking at someone. Following every line, seeing every shadow, every glimmer of light that touches their face. Their smile, the look from their eyes and the expression that radiates their surroundings. The immediate feeling we are given when we know they are present. By the time I've finished drawing/painting a portrait I can feel who they are. As the piece hangs on your wall, I know you will always remember them.

A picture says a thousand words, and a portrait lives on forever.

🧜‍♀️ Mermaid #1
Hand Drawn Charcoal/ White Chalk/ Glitter finish

🏝️ Living in for 8 years, I’ve had many requests for original mermaid art pieces !
Initially inspired for artwork with scales and detail, I turned to my charcoal set on this one🎨🖌️

After many hours of working at it,
I felt the piece was possibly finished! 😊
Everything in black and white, with details & precision in every scale🙌🏻

At this point I'm wondering if it's done.
I turn and ask the wonderful woman I'm loving. I ask what her thoughts are about it.
She shares them with me “A little bit of glitter would really make this piece POP!” 🤩

(Car Screeching sound) ........
I'm sorry, did you say glitter?! On my charcoal piece?! 🫠
The piece I put all this time into!
The piece that's charcoal!!!
I don't mix materials…and NEVER used glitter on any of my pieces !

She looks at me and asks,
Do you trust me? Trust me
Go to the store or something,
I'll let you know when I'm finished.

Reluctant I am for sure,
I've never had someone add to my art.
I'm nervous
Why didn't I just say no? but now I'm in it.
I decided to have a drink…or three🥃🥃🥃

Pacing in the Kitchen only thinking of the mermaid.
The mermaid is in her hands now.
She's wonderfully creative and talented,
but I couldn't help to think she's
either in the middle of expanding my mind
or making me cry.
However, I trust her… I think 🙃

A short period of time passes,
I'm called back into the room.
After feeling in those seconds an eternity passed
wondering what my charcoal lines
which I care so much about would look like…. I opened my eyes 👀

I looked at the mermaid with a smile 😃
My charcoal lines still there,
my detail still there,
my rendering and feeling in the piece all still there!
She cared about them too, sure to be careful of them.
She did something that elevated the piece into something new and creative that a have never seen before!
Using a new material in a clever way
my creativity was expanded
unlike what I would have done on my own

We didn't cover each other
We enhanced each other
