1969,1959,1969&1990. Where and when?
Sharing local maritime history on tours of Long Beach Bar "Bug" Light and at the Seaport Museum
In Greenport, we operate the East End Seaport Museum on the waterfront with its maritime exhibits and collections. Our blacksmith conducts demonstrations of iron working with hands-on experiences for children at the Village Blacksmith Shop. Offshore - we own, operate, and maintain the historic Long Beach Bar (Bug) Lighthouse. Bug Light is the gateway to Greenport, Shelter Island, and Peconic Bay and we are proud to be the stewards of this working navigational structure.
Mission: To celebrate and preserve the maritime heritage of the East End of Long Island, New York.
1969,1959,1969&1990. Where and when?
East End Seaport Museum and Marine Foundation Presents:
Memories of the Bays in the 50’s and 60’s.
The EESM will hold an exhibition of photos and memorabilia from the 1950’s through the 1960’s. The times they were a changing but the East End had the Bays. We hope, with the community’s participation, to develop a “Snapshot of the times”.
We want to document, with your help, how we were formed, nurtured and insulated by the water around us.
You remember that Beach Party, that fishing trip, your father’s boat, your first sailboat or the one that didn’t get away. Not to mention storms, ice and other adventures because… you were there!
Examples of what we are collecting:
Snapshots, pictures, memorabilia, that stuff you can’t throw out. Bring that old pair of water skis, that fishing box your father kept, that pole you caught that big bass on or that brochure from your business, pictures of the fleet. You have memories and the stuff, share it with your community! All will be credited, identified and returned.
These times were rich in memories and no truer picture can be formed without you.
Please bring your treasures to the Seaport Museum. We’re located at 103 Third Street in Greenport, Beginning March 30th and 31st 10-4 and of course by appointment. We can’t do it without you!
Contact: [email protected] or see our website for more information.
Look for our Season opener in May, 2019!
Dear continuing and future Members ,
Thirty years ago an amazing group of right-minded civilly oriented and dauntless local citizens had the audacity to rebuild the lighthouse that once stood at the entrance of our harbor. That’s the short story.
To accomplish this task the community was tapped for every skill that you can possibly imagine, from conception through construction and on to actually getting Long Beach Light, affectionately know as Bug Light, back on the nautical charts as an aid to navigation.
East End Seaport Museum and Marine Foundation was formed as a unifying organization and to have a mechanism in place for the continued mantainence of the light.
But, the founders weren’t done. They had gathered some incredible artifacts in the process. Two amazing Fresnel lamps from local lighthouses, a rare 2nd Order Fresnel lens from Little Gull and a 4th Order lens with the clockworks from Plum Island. These are housed in our museum along with donated and collected artifacts that illustrate our relationship to the waters around us. Preserving this bit of history is our mission.
This year is Starting with great enthusiasm!
We have a full plate with plans for new exhibits and guest speakers at the museum.
We’re starting fresh with changes to the board, and new staff members. I will introduce them in my next newsletter.
Our membership drive, which includes you, is the key to it all. Through your generous support we will be able too meet our mission of preserving and exhibiting artifacts of our recent past and drawing connections to the present.
In the interest of simplicity we have decluttered our membership structure. $50. That’s it.
For that you will get advance notice via email of events and programs, free admission to our museum, lecture series and sponsored events. Plus the knowledge that you are part of the community that believes that an interest in was has happened enriches what is happening and enlightens what will happen.
And it is still only $50.
Of course additional donations are always welcome and are tax deductible.
As always the need for volunteers is paramount! Please sign up with our new director. Staffing is always needed to keep regular hours and especially with events.
The Village Blacksmith Shop under
EESM is fully functional and open most weekends.
Planning for the Maritime Festival is beginning and looks to be off on a good start with some of our favorites returning, more on this later.
This year our mission takes on a little more urgency than in year past with the 30th Anniversary of the lighting of Bug Light, and some structural maintience required we are currently looking into an engineering report and a time line for repairs. Much hinges on this key information. You’ll know as soon as I do.
As alway your input is needed and welcome. Contact me at [email protected]
