Trivia for today. In the collection of the Society is this receipt for a weekly newspaper, the Weekly Dispatch, a weekly version of the Daily Dispatch. The Daily Dispatch began publishing in Richmond, Virginia in 1850. By 1860, it was one of 4 daily newspapers in Richmond. In 1884, the paper changed its name to the Richmond Dispatch and in 1903, it combined with another newspaper to form the Richmond Times-Dispatch, a name that continues to this day.

Do you know me?

We have a large number of unidentified photographs, tintypes, daguerreotypes, and cabinet cards. Reproduced here is a tintype from 1890-1905, according to the clothing, that is part of the Walter Bowles collection in our archives. This young man is not identified in any way and since it the tintype is so clear, even after so many years, we have had it colorized it to help with possible identification. We have all of Walter Bowles' immediate family identified and he doesn't appear to be either of his sons. If anyone can identify this man, please leave a name below in the comments. If it helps, the Walter Bowles family lived in western Goochland on Tabscott Road. Thank you for reading this post and have a great weekend!

The Goochland Courthouse is all dressed up for the 4th. Celebrations at the Courthouse house date back to its earliest days. On July 4, 1827, while the current Courthouse was still being completed, William Bolling wrote in his diary "Independence celebrated at Goochland Courthouse, by about 40 gent. and 20 ladies. The dinner furnished by Wm D. Taylor was scandalous one for such an occasion, and the music very indifferent." Bolling did like to gossip.

This year we will be celebrating at the Goochland Sports Complex Gymnasium due to the heat. 1800 Sandy Hook Road, Goochland, VA 23063. We will have a 250 celebration at 1:00 with a reading of the Declaration of Independence and a bell ringing ceremony followed by ice cream. Come on out and enjoy us in the air conditioning of the gym!

Please note that due to the expected heat on July 4th, the Independence on the Green ceremony has moved to the Goochland...

Today in history:
On June 11, 1776, the Second Continental Congress appointed the Committee of Five to draft a declaration of independence from Great Britain. The committee included Goochland native Thomas Jefferson, along with John Adams of Massachusetts, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, Roger Sherman of Connecticut, and Robert R. Livingston of New York. Jefferson was selected to take the lead and became the principal author of what would become the Declaration of Independence.
