As winter turns to spring in Virginia, reptiles like turtles and snakes become more active β€” and knowing how to interact with them safely is key. 🐒🐍 Jake Pugh and intern Rees Eckenrode from My Three Chambered Heart in Gum Spring shared expert tips.

**Update!** Applications now CLOSED. A very special thank you to everyone who applied. Applicants will be contacted for interviews and our 2026 interns will be announced by the end of May! We received so many great applications!

Do you love science and reptiles? Do you love sharing amazing herpetology facts to anyone that will listen? Do you find snakes endearing and enjoy helping others overcome their fears or misconceptions? If so, you just might be the right fit for our reptile museum internship! Our interns are volunteer docents at our museum in Gum Spring, Virginia. Our interns work closely with our reptile ambassadors and our museum guests. Internships are 6-12 months long with the opportunity to extend based on availability, support needs, and performance. No experience necessary, we teach you everything you need to know! Our internships are science intensive and provide hands-on experiences helpful for future careers in herpetology, zoology, education, conservation, research, veterinary medicine and beyond.

Our second Spring Break Workshop offering is all about VENOM! These workshops allow us to offer special activities and demonstrations we are not able to during regular public hours, so we hope you are as excited about them as we are!

Tuesday, March 31st 10am-12pm

Join us to learn all about the amazing world of venomous animals! We will conduct two (safe, synthetic) venom experiments, meet technically venomous monitor lizards and watch a monitor lizard feeding. We will safely observe Western diamondback rattlesnakes and get up close with real venomous snake specimens (fangs, skulls). We will also meet friendly, non-venomous ambassador reptiles! This is limited to a maximum of 25 participants, and is an exclusive event (the museum will be closed to the public during the workshop). This workshop is best suited for participants 7 years and older. Tickets are $25 per person, and are required for children and their adults. This is not a drop off event, so all children must be accompanied by an adult.

Ok, who wants to meet Thor?! By popular request, we are hosting a workshop where we will be taking out one of our giant snakes for meet and greets with participants!

Our first spring break workshop will be March 30th, 2026 from 10am-12pm. We will be discussing the largest species of reptiles currently alive today, as well as some of the largest species to ever live. Our gentle giants Thor and/or Boidae will be coming out of their enclosures to meet participants. We will also feed some large lizards, meet other species of reptiles, and much more! We will even meet and discuss some of the smallest species.

Some of our ambassadors got the chance to educate the public this morning on LIVE TV! A special thank you to everyone at Virginia This Morning on CBS 6 for inviting us! We think Master Oogway, Uganda, Raleigh and Harry Blu-dini did an AWESOME job! Have you had a chance to meet them? If so, you can say you knew them *before* they were famous! But to be honest, Harry has always been a bit of a diva! πŸ“Ί 🐒🐍🦎

WEATHER UPDATE! πŸβ„οΈ

The museum will be CLOSED this weekend (Saturday AND Sunday, 1/24 and 1/25) in anticipation of the upcoming winter storm. Because of the high risk of prolonged power outages coupled with the extremely low temperatures, we have to do significant preparations to make sure all our amazing reptiles stay safe and warm. Even though the storm isn't predicted to arrive until later Saturday, our emergency procedures are already well underway.

We hope everyone stays safe and warm!
