📚 The Our House Tavern Museum Reading Society meets tonight! 📚
Tonight is our first gathering, and we’d love for you to join us!
The Reading Society is a little different from a traditional book club: there is no assigned book. Each month, we’ll gather around a theme, and everyone is invited to read a book of their own choosing that fits that month’s theme. We’ll then come together to share what we read, what we thought, and what stories stood out to us.
To help keep the conversation flowing and to keep our train of thought from disappearing the moment it’s our turn to speak we’ve created a Reader’s Record! It gives you a place to jot down your thoughts, reactions, favorite quotes, and more.
You’ll see both a blank template and an example below. The completed example is from the book I chose for this month, simply to show how the template can be used. You are welcome to print the blank template and fill it out before you arrive, or we’ll have copies available tonight for you to complete here.

📖 August’s Theme: America’s Story
Choose any book that you feel tells, explores, or reflects America’s story in any genre and from any perspective.
Tonight | August 6
6:00–7:00 PM
Second Floor Ballroom | Our House Tavern Museum
☕ Light refreshments will be provided.

Haven’t read a book yet? You’re still welcome! Come hear what others chose, join the conversation, and get some inspiration for next month.
And if you can’t make it tonight, our August theme will be revealed online tomorrow so you can choose your next volume and read along with us!

One theme. Countless stories.

We hope you’ll join the Reading Society. 📚

Our House Tavern Museum would like to extend a special thank you to Seth Argabright for reading the Declaration of Independence from the tavern steps today. We'd also like to thank Misty from the Jackson Pike Piggly Wiggly, the Gallipolis Visitors Bureau, the Friends of Our House, our dedicated staff and volunteers, and, most of all, our wonderful visitors for helping make our Ice Cream Social a memorable celebration of our nation's anniversary.

We wish everyone a fun, safe, and happy Fourth of July!

🇺🇸 Happy Independence Day, Gallipolis! 🇺🇸

We’re excited to invite our community to the launch of a new monthly reading group centered around great books, meaningful conversation, and a shared love of learning,
Unlike a traditional book club, the Reading Society doesn’t assign a single book. Instead, each month will feature a theme, and you chose ANY book that fits! Whether you enjoy historical fiction, biographies, memoirs, nonfiction, classics, fantasy, or another genre, if you feel it connects to the months theme, it’s welcome.
We chose this format because we wanted Reading Society to be as welcoming and accessible as possible. Readers of all ages, reading levels, and interest can participate without feeling limited to one assigned title. It also makes joining easy! You don’t have to track down a specific book before attending. Simply chose a title that interest you and join in on our conversation.

📖 How it works 📖
-A new theme will be announced at the beginning of each month, giving everyone time to chose and enjoy a book before we gather the first week of the following month.
-Chose to read one book, or read as many as you would like that fit the theme.
-Join us for a relaxed spoiler free discussion where we encourage everyone to avoid major plot twist or endings.
Our goal is for readers to leave each meeting with a growing list of books they wish to read!
One of our favorite parts of this format is that every meeting becomes an opportunity to to discover new books! Adding to the never ending TBR! 🗒️

Reading Society is about more than books. It is about building community, exploring new ideas, encouraging ourselves to read more, and creating meaningful conversations with people who share a love of stories and history. Our hope is to create a space where every reader can discover new books, share new perspectives, and enjoy thoughtful discussions inspired by a common theme.

As our first meeting approaches, we will share a Reading Reflection Guide. This is completely optional, but it’s designed to help organize thoughts, jot down favorite quotes or moments, and prepare a spoiler free “book pitch” to share with the group. Whether you are an experienced book club member or joining one for the first time, we hope it helps you feel comfortable participating in discussion.

OUR FIRST MEETING
Our first meeting will be Wednesday, August 6, at 6pm.

JULY THEME: America’s Story

In celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, choose any book that explores the people, places, or events that shaped our nations history. Historical fiction, biographies, memoirs, non-fiction, Appalachian history, and many other genres all fit this months theme.

Happy Reading! We will see you on the August 6th!

If you made it this far, please tell us what book you are thinking about reading for “America’s Story” Let us know in the comments!

While you enjoy all that downtown has to offer this Fourth of July, be sure to stop by the Our House Tavern for our Fourth of July Ice Cream Social!🍦Cool off with a free scoop of ice cream, explore one of Gallipolis’ historical landmarks, and enjoy a relaxing stop a short walk from the day’s celebrations.
While you’re here, don’t miss the opportunity to see the jacket associated with Marquis de Lafayette, whose contributions during the American Revolution helped secure American independence. It’s a meaningful way to reflect on the history behind the holiday we celebrate. 🇺🇸 🎆 🎇
⬇️ See flyer below for event details ⬇️

We would also like to extend a sincere thank you to the Gallia County Visitors Bureau for their support in helping make this event possible. Their continued investment in local events and tourism helps strengthen our community!

A special thank you to the Gallipolis Garden Club for helping keep the museum gardens thriving! Their hard work creates a beautiful space for our visitors and provides valuable habitat for local pollinators. Judging by this busy bee, we're not the only ones enjoying the garden this summer! 🐝🌿
The next time you are enjoying the beautiful courtyard here at Our House keep the Gallipolis Garden Club and their hard work in mind!
