This series of pictures shows two loudspeaker trucks ready to hit the campaign trail for George Smathers's first run for US Senator. He served from 1951-1969.

The Brooking Motor Company was owned and operated by Charles S. Brooking from the late 1920s until he sold it in 1953. He specialized in Dodge-Plymouth autos. This building is located on SE 1st Avenue and has been converted into offices.

On this date in 1932 the Gainesville Sun listed the daily schedule for the WRUF radio station. WRUF - Home of the Gators signed on in 1928 and still operates today (ESPN 98.1FM/850AM WRUF). Which program would you like to listen to?

According to the Suwannee County Historical Commission & Museum, "Formally organized in 1878, Live Oak was named for a large oak tree that stood beside the first train station in the area of northwest Scriven St. and Irvin St. Railroad workers gathered at noontime to eat in the shade of the tree. Railroads from the north and south converged at this juncture."

This postcard is of the first public school in Like Oak, which opened in the 1890s. The building no longer stands.

George Linzmayer Jr (1901-1983) opened "George's Market" (also known as George's Wonder Market, George's Meat-A-Rama and George's Super Meats) in 1926 when he moved to Gainesville from Matawan, New Jersey. His business moved a few times but was located last on SE 4th Avenue.

Linzmayer and his wife, Marie, had seven children. They were members of Holy Trinity Episcopal. George was a member of the Gainesville Moose Lodge No. 1140 and the Gainesville Elks Lodge No. 990. Marie was the first senior regent of the Women of the Moose, Chapter 1098. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and active in the Gainesville Little Theater.
