Some of the most meaningful responses to our recent posts has been hearing from people whose parents, grandparents, or other family members attended Possum Trot School.

We would love to hear more.

These personal connections help us better understand the people who learned there and the community the school served.

With permission, some of these memories may also be featured in future Cherokee County Museum and CHAPS educational or social media posts as we continue telling the story of Possum Trot.

A "Blueprint for Liberty" has made its way to the Cherokee County Museum and will remain through the end of October. The exhibition is part of the South Carolina State Museum’s Traveling Exhibitions Program, which provides museums, galleries, libraries, and community organizations across the state access to engaging educational exhibitions and resources.

What is the Possum Trot Schoolhouse Experience?

Designed for students in grades 3–5, this immersive program gives children the opportunity to step inside a historic one-room schoolhouse and learn as students might have in 1885.

Through hands-on activities such as slate writing, recitations, mental math, South Carolina history, geography, and schoolhouse responsibilities, students experience local history in a way that goes far beyond reading about it in a textbook.

The goal is simple: help students understand the past by giving them the chance to live it, question it, and connect it to the world they know today.

Something special is coming to the Cherokee County Museum…

This fall, students in grades 3–5 will have the opportunity to step inside the historic Possum Trot Schoolhouse and experience what learning was like in 1885.

Slates. Recitations. Mental math. One-room schoolhouse life.

The Possum Trot Schoolhouse Experience is bringing local history to life in a whole new way.

We’re down to the last few tickets for Vintage for Preservation at the Cherokee County Museum and we will be closing ticket sales Tuesday, August 25.

How did artists depict the American Revolution while it was happening and shortly after independence was won? What visual knowledge was available to newly minted Americans about the war and its heroes? How was the war remembered fifty and seventy-five years later, as the nation headed towards Civil War?
