A Handcrafted Quilt by Deb Ramsey will be raffled off in the afternoon of the Freeport Homecoming on August 1, 2026. Tickets will be sold only on the day of the Freeport Homecoming during the Historical Societies opening hours 11am-3pm. Tickets are $1each or 6 for $5. Proceeds benefit the Freeport Historical Society.

James Losey also patented a “portable gate” in January of 1893. This gate was designed to be lightweight and retractable by pulling a chain to release the rollers allowing the gate on a sliding frame to slide back easily for opening. Along with other mechanisms for tilting and adjusting of the gate.

In September of 1893 James Losey invented a new and useful gate that readily opens and closes easily. It is mounted on a sliding and tilting frame that is supported by parallel uprights and parallel rollers. This, along with other gate improvements, makes it much easier to operate. If anyone has seen this gate and may know of some pictures from Freeport and surrounding areas would be wonderful to see.

This patent, by Horace Case in 1884, was and is a very useful tool for those that trim trees on tree farms, fruit farms and nursery farms.
Horace Case of Freeport invented certain new and useful improvements to the Pruning-Shears patent by Samson and Dill in October 1882. Horace’s improvements included the shears have the ability to work in opposite directions to cut a small limb or a twig from a tree without injuring the bark that remains on the tree. The other improvement is the hook feature which assisted one to be able to pull a branch or a twig down to a convenient cutting distance.
These wonderful improvements to the pruning shears helped with trimming and pruning time for many fruit growers, nurserymen, and other small tree growers. If you visit one of those farms you may see these pruning shears in use or in the barn on a wall for display.

Now that the temperatures are warming up outside, I thought this would be a great patent to introduce you to. Hiram C. Kree’s patent; the “Reclining-Chair”, with shared credit given to James D. Cool and Charles A. Curtis. This chair readily converts a wooden folding chair from a standing position to recumbent, or a nearly horizontal position and other angles in between. According to the U.S. Patent registration list, there were seven individuals that had a similar patent for a reclining chair in the same year. Isn’t that interesting?
