Chaplin Creek Village

Chaplin Creek Village Chaplin Creek Village was founded and supported by the Franklin Grove Area Historical Society. It sponsors events and the grounds are open to the public.

Chaplin Creek Village is an evolving, full-scale historical restoration project depicting a prairie settlement typical of the middle 19th century. The village is being developed around a crossroads as many small communities did at that time. The name for the village, "Chaplin", comes from the first settlement in the area, which was just north of the historic site at the intersection of Lahman and State streets in the Village of Franklin Grove.

Mission: The Franklin Grove Area Historical Society was founded to establish, promote and maintain a society dedicated to the study and preservation of our area history. The Society’s function is to research, collect, preserve, and display any artifacts, documents or lands, which illustrate and reflect the Franklin Grove area heritage. The Society endeavors to make its possessions, property and materials readily accessible with discretion, to those who wish to study and examine it.

Chaplin Creek Historic Village is a project of the Franklin Grove Area Historical Society. An evolving prairie settlement typical of the middle 19th century located SW of Franklin Grove on Whitney Road.
The village is developing around a crossroads as many small communities did at that time. The crossroads is the intersection of Timothy and Taylor, Timothy being the EW road and Taylor the NS road.

The name for the village, "Chaplin", comes from the first settlement in the area which was just north of here at the intersection of Lahman and State streets in Franklin Grove. For further information on the early history of Franklin Grove, visit our face book page.

As of today, several buildings have been relocated here from the surrounding area as a core for the development.;
First was a Blacksmith Shop moved in from Ashton.
Next came a Saltbox Style house that was built in the middle 1800's from west of Rochelle.
This was followed by a typical Country School from north of Ashton. Several smaller buildings have been added since with the latest addition being an English Style Barn which was relocated from Kane County. It was torn down in the fall of 1999, repaired, and raised as a demonstration during the 2000 Summer Harvest Festival.

The site is the home of the Franklin Grove Area Historical Society and the Chaplin Creek Muzzle Loaders.
Several special events occur during the year, most notably, the Summer Harvest Festival which is part of a community wide celebration.
Come visit our unique little village.
