Titled - Chasing the train out of Antonito - Color Study Oil on 18 x 14 linen canvas. Yes, odd name for a painting without a train. A couple of weeks back, I took the scenic train on the Combres and Toltec out of Antonito, Colorado with my wife Terri. I/we was fortunate to be seated in the very last car in the back (paid extra) and got to stand outside with the brakeman as track passed from underneath us (see video posted previously). Within a minute or so of our departure, I witnessed and photographed this fellow on a horse as he started chasing the train. I was giddy with excitement because I knew it was going to be a painting...and so here it is...although not yet complete. The Brakeman, who I will also begin a color study of, said he never saw the man on the horse before and it was not part of anything the Rail Road was putting on for show. So this is a painting of a very unique experience. Artists usually have to pay models/actors in costume big money to get this kind of thing staged for photography. You can't snap your fingers and have a galluping horse and rider at full throttle chasing the train your on. The rider looked to be Indian and the tank top adds interest to the concept. With a little imagination, It was like living in a western where the train is about to be robbed. Can anybody Identify with what I'm saying here?:-)
Now that I know the paint colors I used will work, should I make this into a bigger painting?
