An isolated house is nestled in the evening light of the Depression-era West Texas landscape. Two buttes are silhouetted against the sky. Through the central placement of a red rock or orb in the foreground, Harry Carnohan, an important member of the Dallas Nine, introduced elements of surrealism and an ethereal quality while not abandoning his passion for regionalism. Red radiates from the rock and reflects on the windows of the house. There is a strength and assurance in the composition that carries belief that they would endure the hardships of that era.

Carnohan’s West Texas Landscape (1936) was exhibited in the monumental 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition at The Dallas Museum of Fine Arts in Fair Park. As a crew member, he worked alongside other members of the Dallas Nine on murals and sculptural installations for the Texas Centennial Exposition.

Lot 167 & 168 in the 30th Anniversary Texas Art Auction to be held on Saturday, October 10th, 2026.
