About his work "Artemision Bronze," 2020, artist James Welling shared, "I think of the aching model's arms as he stood for hours before the sculptor. The pose recalls the yoga position 'Warrior Two.'”

On Saturday, September 26, families gathered in the The Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at Fairfield University Lobby for a fun afternoon exploring the art of photography!

During this Family Day event, children created colorful abstract photographs inspired by James Welling by layering transparent colored shapes, patterns, and light effects over printed photos or paper backgrounds. They experimented with color, shadows, and texture to make ordinary images look dreamy, bright, and imaginative!

Join us for our next Family Day on Saturday, October 17, "Let's Draw Like an Ancient Egyptian."

The first exhibition to open on campus this fall, "Hieroglyphs to Hype: The Modern Afterlife of Ancient Egypt" explores the enduring fascination with ancient Egyptian art and culture (dubbed “Egyptomania” by 19th-century Europeans) through a selection of paintings, prints, photographs, and decorative art ranging from the early 19th century through the present day. These objects, from the humble to the refined, from the shamelessly commercial to the Afrofuturist, represent the range of artistic responses to—and misconceptions about—ancient Egyptian visual culture.

The exhibition is curated by Megan Paqua, Fairfield University Art Museum registrar and adjunct instructor of ancient Egyptian archaeology and art history at Fairfield.

Dread Scott, one of the artists included in the exhibition, shares his story in the film, which features the stories of participants in landmark Supreme Court rulings over a First Amendment right.
