Have you seen our new outdoor additions yet? Thanks to Brice Equipment Tire Division we now have picnic tables made by Alaska Plastic Recovery right outside our space! These are made from Alaskan plastic and they are sturdy enough to meet the demands of a children's museum. Yay!

What about Legos for Christmas? Alaskan art? Yarn?

Aside from the fact that this fundraiser supports our operations, the auction items basically scream overachiever in the gift buying department and who doesn't want THAT badge of honor as a parent / grandparent / aunt / uncle / other title?!

Check out all the legos, art prints, and other items before bidding ends on 10/15: https://fairbankschildrensmuseum.betterworld.org/auctions/invest-imagination

A special thank you goes to Brice Equipment and Brice Inc. Brice Equipment Tire Division for donating these amazing tables!

Grizzly Wood tables for the Fairbanks Children's Museum

700 miles north, with a tableful of smiles waiting 🚚💚

Yesterday we rolled into Fairbanks with a special delivery for the Fairbanks Children's Museum: four 8-foot ADA-accessible Grizzly Wood picnic tables, plus a pint-sized 3-foot table built just for little hands. 🧒

The Children's Museum is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so we were glad to pitch in — donating the child-sized table and the cost of shipping it all the way up the Parks Highway. When we first offered, Development Director Angel Peger put it better than we ever could:

💬 "This is the best news — you just made my summer."

That's exactly why we do this. These tables are made from recycled Alaska plastic, they'll shrug off Fairbanks winters without rot or splinters, and they'll give kids and families a sturdy place to gather, create, and snack for decades to come.

A huge thank-you to Angel Peger and to Togi Letuligasenoa for making it happen, and to the crew who helped us wrestle these (not-so-light!) tables into place. Fairbanks, enjoy them! 🎨

And while we're talking about professional development (missed it? Scroll one back), these two brains-of-the-operation toured established children's museums in the Lower48 to gather information and inspiration for our new space at City Hall.

Thanks for showing them around, KidsQuest Children's Museum and Seattle Children's Museum!

"They just play all day, it's such an easy job!" Where, I ask? WHERE?! Let me tell you about what we do:

People hear "Children's Museum" and often assume we just play all day. Like it's so easy. Did you know there is actual science behind play and entire organizations dedicated to the absolutely mind-blowingly important work that children's museums do?! Just take Association of Children's Museums, for example, who advocate, educate, and generally dominate in the name of early childhood education. We go to their annual conference and we come back smarter, inspired, connected.

But that's not all we do. Our staff works REALLY FREAKING HARD to get better at what they do here so that kids in our community get to benefit from the science behind "just play" every time they step foot into our space (or meet us outside somewhere).

Take Teal, for example, who just went through a program called MuseumLab for Museum Professionals, a professional development program focused on exhibit and experience design, held through the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh. The program included a week of virtual meetings, followed by six days of on site training and learning in Pittsburgh. Each member of the cohort was tasked with moving a project forward, which Teal used to design and put together a traveling museum kit to streamline our packing system for our village outreaches. And two weeks ago, they presented the project at the Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC) conference in Phoenix, Arizona, alongside other cohort members.

What we offer here is backed by science and official organizations, it's not "just play" and it's developed by PROFESSIONALS.

Still here? Thanks for reading.
