The "Ber" months have arrived.
And Heeeerrrrrre’s JUDI!
Yes indeed, it is September of 2026.
I recently read a book where a character wanted to die before Dec 31,1999 so that they could avoid the new century. And here we are over a quarter of a way through it.
We have a rather important announcement to make – our annual closure for cleaning is going to be in September this year. We are compacting it as much as we can to 4 days.
September 7,8,9. And 10 we will be closed for floor repairs and general deep cleaning and defrosting of freezers, etc.
We will be open bright and early on September 11th at 8am, and we will be hosting our Open Mic (https://www.instagram.com/silentbookclubeverett/) that evening and the downtown will be hosting the Seagaze music festival (https://seagaze.org/festival/seagaze-festival-2026/) – so come down and experience some great live music. SeaGaze will be offering events at El Sid and Lucky Dime, The Horseshoe, and Bayside. Maybe some year we can be involved, too? We will see.
This Thursday the 3rd is the September Silent Book Club, (https://www.instagram.com/silentbookclubeverett/) 6:30 pm
Saturday the 5th at 10am is the Writers Salon (https://www.instagram.com/silentbookclubeverett/)
That Saturday Evening is Stab and GAb (https://www.instagram.com/silentbookclubeverett/) , hosted by Spark Creatives.
We have so many community groups stepping in and starting up their fall calendar with us, I honestly can’t name them all – so come on in and ask “What’s happening?” and if you don’t find the kind of group you want to experience, maybe that is a sign to get one going!
Speaking of Community Spaces, of which we consider ourselves one, we have been honored to be included in an article by Ellen Hiatt for Welcome Magazine about the need for them and the variety that the county hosts. What a gift to be included!!
As a bookshop, we get asked all the time “do you have….?” And it is always a disappointment to us when we have to disappoint you ( And a TOTAL JOY when we have it on hand!!!) which is why we often suggest using our Bookshop.org (https://bookshop.org/shop/artisansbooks_coffee) portal for online orders. But there is another reason and it is the super cool books that come out that we don’t have the resources to carry as many as we might need, and honestly no idea how many we might need.
There are a few of these coming up – Sarah J Maas is releasing book #6 in the ACOTAR series, A Court of Splintered Harmony (https://bookshop.org/shop/artisansbooks_coffee) in October and #7 A Court of Forgotten Melody (https://bookshop.org/shop/artisansbooks_coffee) in January. We will be ordering a decent handful, (been told to wrap our preorders for book 6 soon to make sure we get our copies) but a great way to guarantee your copy would be to have it shipped right to your door from Bookshop.org (https://bookshop.org/a/97099/9781639739134) . And honestly, we are not getting a ton of them, so preordering them from us (soon!!!!) or from Bookshop would be the best way to ensure you get the next installation in the saga.
Another book that would be a good one to preorder (we don’t have this one up for preorders yet, but I will work on it, Bookshop has it up already) (https://bookshop.org/a/97099/9798217192199) is the super cool Deluxe Version of Dungeon Crawler Carl. Book one is coming out with one of the most intense Special Editions I have seen yet – original art on the dustcover that is filled with in jokes and Easter Eggs. The cover itself is a maze with all of the characters on it. The end pages are amazing and it has sprayed edges, as well. It isn’t cheap, so we have only 2 on order right now. I will put up a preorder for it and if you want it you will need to let us know ASAP. Or, you can order it from Bookshop and have it come right to your door.
We had so much fun doing release parties for books last year but the creative book mind that did a lot of the planning is now working for another bookstore and I don’t have the bandwidth to provide that – BUT! I keep saying, if we can sell 300 new books a month – we can afford a book staffer who can make the book events and selection work for us all!
BTW, speaking of books, and we do that a lot around here, September is the month that some of the staff travels to the PNBA (Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association) trade show and we get filled in on all the great things coming up in the next year as well as getting Advanced Reading Copies of sooooo many books and even some signed copies that we can bring into the shop. This year Judi and Emma Kate are going and really looking forward to hearing TJ Klune speak.
And while on that topic, Banned Book Week is October 4-10th and has the theme, Let Books Be, Protect the Freedom to Read. We will be filling in the shelves with banned books for you to read. I admit, some on the lists on those lists just kind of make me irritated. Junie B Jones, people. Junie B Jones, because she speaks incorrectly and it could cause children to also speak incorrectly. A parent requested it banned for everyone else because of that. ARGH
The other bookish event in October is, for us, Downtown Trick or Treat. (https://downtowneverettwa.org/event/downtown-trick-or-treating-2025/) This time on Halloween itself, from 11-3pm. We will hand out a lightly used book to all kiddos in costume…oh! and some candy, etc. We aren’t Monsters!
Also, don’t forget and drop the ball on the announcement of the Cookie Crawl (https://downtowneverettwa.org/event/cookie-crawl/) tickets. They sell out so fast. This year the crawl is on December 12th and the tickets will be available through the Downtown Everett Association. ( I don’t have the ticket release date yet) This is such a fun family event, sharing the dozen cookies amongst the family– or go solo and keep them all for yourself! We have seen a young mother come through with young kids, the kids get one super cool gummy candy at every stop while she builds up the collection in the box. Everyone was happy!
This year we have been hosting local authors and their books during Everett’s Art Walk on the third Thursday. It is a great time to experience downtown, check out several locations and maybe meet your new favorite author!
We have had so much going on with the café side, I mean, have you tried our little Chicken Salad on a roll? Or better yet, on an English Muffin toasted open face???? But back to what I was saying – we have some great stuff happening on the shop side as well. Every two weeks or so, there is an influx of fresh vintage clothes, and we now have two providers, so two points of view coming in, Emma Kate has joined Cat in the search for great clothes for you all.
We also have a new provider of scented things – candles, smudge spray and healing salves – made locally by Mary’s Corner.
Have you seen the intricate beading on small purses and earrings that we have in from Beadwork From the Inside? The story about the artists is pretty amazing – you should ask Emma Kate to share it.
The vintage jewelry and recrafted vintage jewelry is filling the glass cases - sharing some space, of course, with Beading From the Inside. Christina of Purrsistence Works has brought in some really cool scale work with her chainmaille jewelry. I personally love my long rainbow dangle earrings and wear them frequently. Danie of Curious Nature Studios has brought in some fresh designs in stickers, magnets and enamel pins that glow in the dark. Her Mandrakes make me smile – and the Shrooms are cute as well!
So there are things to be seen, and touched and tried. We have great coloring books for kids and adults and all in between. Our art supplies are on the way to be being restocked soon but we still have our colored pencils in tubes and crayon selections for kiddos – or whomever likes using them. Let us know what style of art supplies you need available – pastels? water colors? Let us know!
We are also really interested in knowing what genres of books you want to find when you come in – art books? History? Mystery or maybe Suspense? We know you love Horror and try to keep that with new titles coming in every month. But what do you want to see? To find? Do you tend to look for that best seller from a couple of years ago because you are finally ready to read it? Or maybe you are doing the Classics Binge and reading all the ones we are supposed to have read already and you want the top selling book from 1910? Do you want us to carry more children’s, and if so, do you want the brand new titles, or again, the tried and true classics? Does the teen in your life love YA stories? We really do need to know.
I had a customer comment that she almost never buys books new, but couldn’t find the book used anywhere so she bought it full price. How do you feel about that? Are you looking for pristine unread pages or preloved and well worn?
Rather than a survey where I may not even include the question you want to answer, why don’t you just reply to this email? If we are your bookstore, or you would like us to be, let me know what you want to see so that, if possible, we can grow in the direction you would all like to see.
Well, it is getting late and I want to get this sent to you first thing in the morning, so I will wrap up by saying – again and again and again – Thank You. I thank you, the staff thanks you, my family thanks you. We could not provide community space for all the amazing things that happen here if each of you hadn’t opted to make us your space. When I was asked about “creating” our space I had to say, I may have painted the walls, Tim put up the shelves, Luin tweaked the menu and Emma Kate made all the details better with her touch, but that wasn’t what made our space a community gathering place. It was you all who came in and kept coming back. We thank you deeply.
