Join us for Inked in History on Friday, November 13, from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm, to learn about the history of tattooing in Oklahoma as we commemorate the 20th anniversary of the signing of Senate Bill 806!

Senate Bill 806 was signed by Governor Brad Henry and took effect on November 1, 2006, legalizing tattooing in the state of Oklahoma, making it the last state to do so. At this special event, attendees will learn about the history of tattooing in Oklahoma, its roots in Indigenous cultures, and speak to Oklahoma tattoo artists. Visitors will also have a chance to receive flash tattoos by one of the featured artists!

This year’s featured artists include: Richard, Sawyer, & Jazzy from Culture Tattoo in Enid, OK, Nathalie Standingcloud from Earthly Medicine Tattoo in Tahlequah, OK, and Sleepy Pete & Jay from Spaded and Jaded Tattoo in Tulsa, OK.

Entry to this event is included in the regular cost of admission at no extra charge. Those wanting to receive a tattoo must be 18 years of age and produce a valid ID. Tattoos are on a first-come, first-served basis and are a separate fee payable to the artist. The Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center does not have an ATM, so please be prepared in advance!

We’ve had lots of students through the Turkey Creek School doors this semester, and it’s been extra special to host entire families as they visit us with homeschool groups!

We love making memories with folks of all ages, and sharing history in tangible ways like this!

Making rag dolls, doing arithmetic with pumpkin seeds in the schoolhouse, grinding corn, making coffee over the fire… these are just a few of the activities families participated in during History Alive! on the Cherokee Strip today!

Today, we had another fantastic group of students visit us for a Pioneer Life Homesteading Experience! 🤠

This group learned some valuable lessons about what life was like in the late nineteenth century as a homesteader in the Outlet!

In addition to making butter from scratch and grinding corn and coffee, second graders from Prairie View Elementary learned about importance of water, and how it was vital not only for drinking, but also for cleaning, and keeping things like crops and livestock alive! 🪣🌾🐂🐄

They could only choose 3 structures to build (draw) on their individual plots, and several chose not to dig a well. Luckily, they also learned how to barter with their neighbors on nearby claims with farm-fresh eggs and grain from their fields! 😃

These kids worked together to haul water, sort linens, wash laundry, and hang it up to dry! 🧺🧽

Did you know today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day?

Before the northwest region of Oklahoma was opened for public settlement, it was hunting ground for the Cherokee people. This where the name “Cherokee Outlet” comes from.

Oklahoma is home to 38 federally recognized tribes!

We honor and celebrate those who first called this land home.

This witch costume was donated to us in 2004, and was hand-made by the donor’s grandmother in the 1930s! 🧙‍♀️
