Schedel Arboretum & Gardens

Schedel Arboretum & Gardens Website: www.schedel-gardens.org Well that’s exactly what you will see when you visit the 17 acres of preserved natural beauty at Schedel Arboretum and Gardens!
(245)

The gardens are currently closed until April however, appointments for weddings and other events are possible [email protected] to make an appointment. Imagine stepping out your back door only to find yourself
lost in acres upon acres of brightly colored gardens filled
with Bloodgood Japanese Maples, Chinese Fringe Trees, Colorado Blue Spruces, Cucumber Mongolias, 18 different species

of pine, more than 50 varieties of lilacs and Bald cypress, and an innumerate variety of other flowers, trees,
and shrubs. On land of more than 100 acres, Joseph and Marie Schedel bought this property and a charming Victorian mansion located in Elmore, Ohio (Northwest Ohio near Toledo) in 1929 for the development of an arboretum and gardens. Having
traveled to more than 100 countries, this couple filled their mansion with
treasures like a Hereke silk prayer rug, antique Persian rugs, teak furniture, Japanese silk embroideries, 1000-year-old bronze, and one of the largest
remaining Jade collections in the world. The Joseph J. & Marie P. Schedel Foundation was established by the Schedels in 1963 to protect and preserve their estate for the enjoyment of present and future generations. To preserve the Schedel’s dreams, their property was left with those who would care for it after their deaths in the 1980s. The main purpose of the Foundation today is to promote and maintain the arboretum and gardens for the enjoyment and education of residents of the region and beyond. The Schedel Arboretum & Gardens is proud to display and maintain the largest collection of lithophanes in the World - The Blair Collection. Originally donated by collector Laurel Blair to the City of Toledo in 1993, the collection was housed in Mr. Blair's Old West End Toledo home until his death. Starting in 2002, the collection was displayed in the Artist's Village at the Toledo Botanical Gardens. Unable to care for the collection any longer, and pursuant to Mr. Blair's original donation agreement, the City of Toledo passed the collection to the Schedel Foundation as an organization capable of its care as successor donee in July 2020. Additionally, the picturesque gardens have become a popular location for weddings, receptions, parties, and other social functions. The Brown Welcome Center was completed in 2008 and houses not only the administrative offices for the Schedel Arboretum and Gardens, but also a fine art gallery as well as banquet and meeting facilities for groups up to 100 people. With state-of-the-art audio-video facilities, spacious meeting rooms, and breath-taking vistas, it’s a great place for groups to meet! So much is happening at Schedel Arboretum & Gardens right now.
Thousands of annuals have been planted and the beds designs are stunning. The peonies and iris are making their mark at the gardens too!

A new exhibit is featured in the Blair Museum of Lithophanes "Translucency of Water"- where life sustains and porcelain reveals.
A must see.

What's new at Schedel Arboretum & Gardens
Take a look at the new sculpture by the talented artist, Thomas Yano. This collection of musicians was made possible by SA&G members Mike & Carol Fahle. There are a few finishing touches to complete the installation however, these stunning pieces already fit in perfectly.

In addition to the thousands of annuals the grounds crew planted the past 10 days, the iris and peonies have finally started peeking out too. IT is happening! https://www.schedel-gardens.org/visit.html

Other events this week: Thursday the 21st beer and wine tasting with The Red Fern Inn at Rocky Point Winery and Saturday the 23rd a bonsai make and take with SA&G bonsai specialist, Andy. Reservations are required for both events. https://www.schedel-gardens.org/calendar.html

The grounds crew has made this a triumphant week ...planting nearly all the beds except for the driveway. Amazing!

The Biggest Week In American Birding the birds are flowing in as well. We have a long list of species at the Brown Welcome Center. Feel free to let us know what you find too.

What's happening at Schedel Arboretum & Gardens you ask...
Our small yet amazing grounds crew has most of the annuals in the ground! The iris are starting to peek out. Guessing the peony will pop out over the weekend too.

Had a great visit with some of the Penta Career Center students. Scavenger hunt, pinecone flower make and take, and ice cream Sundays. What a day.

The migrating birds are flocking in to Schedel Arboretum & Gardens along with the bird watchers.
The Biggest Week In American Birding- come on over!

SA&G reported:
Eastern Warbling Vireo – often heard more than seen, with a steady, rambling song in treetops.
Yellow Warbler – bright yellow and very active; classic spring migrant.
Baltimore Oriole – one of the flashiest arrivals, with that vivid orange and black.
Northern Mockingbird – year-round in many places, but more noticeable now with their nonstop singing.
Chipping Sparrow and Song Sparrow – both common, but their songs help distinguish them easily.
Northern Cardinal, Green Heron and American Robin – familiar residents that round out the soundscape.
Magnolia Warbler and Yellow Rump Warbler
That’s a pretty classic early–mid spring migration list for the Midwest. Orioles and warblers showing up usually mean things are in full swing.
