NOW OPEN!

“California Fibers: Tactile Thinking”, on display from October 12 through November 12, features the work of fourteen members of California Fibers, exploring how artists express tactile thinking through the medium of textiles. Thinking doesn’t happen only in the mind. For these artists, ideas take shape through the hands - in the pull of a thread, the tension of a weave, the layering of surfaces, and the slow, repeated gestures of making. Each work holds a record of that process, inviting viewers to consider touch as a way of understanding and responding to the world.

The Hyde Art Gallery is located in the Grossmont College Visual & Performing Arts Center (building 22) and our daily walk-in hours are Monday through Thursday from 10:00am to 4:00pm. The Hyde is excited to present our second exhibition of the Fall 2026 Semester, “California Fibers: Tactile Thinking”, on view from October 12 through November 12.

Featuring the work of fourteen members of California Fibers, this exhibition explores how artists express tactile thinking through the medium of textiles. Thinking doesn’t happen only in the mind. For these artists, ideas take shape through the hands - in the pull of a thread, the tension of a weave, the layering of surfaces, and the slow, repeated gestures of making. Each work holds a record of that process, inviting viewers to consider touch as a way of understanding and responding to the world.

Participating artists include Sandy Abrams, Charlotte Bird, Carrie Burckle, Polly Jacobs Giacchina, Lydia Tjioe Hall, Mônica Lóss, Chari Myers, Kathy Nida, Marty Ornish, Michael F. Rohde, Rebecca Smith, Elise Vazelakis, Debra Weiss, and Peggy Wiedemann. Exhibition juried by Alex DeCosta.

California Fibers, founded in 1970, supports artistic growth and professional advancement for contemporary Southern California fiber artists. Their creative expression includes weaving, basketry, sculpture, quilting, embroidery, felting, surface design, knitting, crochet, wearables, and mixed media. For more information about this group, please visit www.californiafibers.com.

From our memorial reception to David Wing on Thursday September 10th.

Thank you for joining us to honor our late photography program colleague and celebrating the exhibition “Field Trips: Photographing Away”, now on display in the gallery’s Patterson Window Display. This exhibition features the work of 15 photographers who studied under Professor Wing at Grossmont College from 1973 until his retirement in 2003.

“Field Trips: Photographing Away” has been extended through Tuesday, October 13.

Join us again this Thursday, September 24, from 4-6pm for the closing reception of our 2026 Visual Arts & Humanities Department Faculty and Staff Exhibition.

Join us tomorrow, Thursday September 10th, as we honor the memory of our Grossmont College photography colleague, Professor David Wing.

Our memorial reception for “Field Trips, Photographing Away: A David Wing Tribute Exhibition” will be from 5-7pm in the Performing & Visual Arts Center Lobby and Hyde Art Gallery. “Field Trips” presents the work of 15 photographers who studied under Professor Wing at Grossmont College from 1973 until his retirement in 2003.

“David’s legacy as both a photographer and a professor continues to reverberate in all those he influenced. He inspired us all to see the world through our personal lens as we continue to photograph away.”

During his lifetime, David Wing organized, designed, and published over 25 books of photographs. As part of this exhibition, David Wing’s family has generously donated many copies of these books to distribute to students and gallery visitors for free. Please enjoy the exhibition and take a book or two with you as a guide in your photographic journey.

NOW OPEN!

Our annual Faculty and Classified Staff Exhibition, “IN•SIGHT 2026”, and “Field Trips | Photographing Away: David Wing Tribute Exhibition” are both now open to walk-in visitors.

The Hyde Art Gallery is located in the Grossmont College Visual & Performing Arts Center (building 22) and our daily walk-in hours are Monday through Thursday from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Both exhibitions will be on display from August 31st until September 24th.

Two new exhibitions opening at the Hyde Art Gallery this Monday!

We’re kicking off Spring 2026 with our annual Faculty and Classified Staff Exhibition, IN•SIGHT. This show highlights the incredible creativity of the Visual Arts and Humanities Department here at Grossmont College. Our faculty and staff aren’t just mentors in the classroom - they’re also practicing artists. This exhibition gives our college community a chance to connect with them on a deeper level and see the artistic minds that shape the student experience. You’ll find work across a wide range of media including ceramics, drawing, jewelry, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture.

Also on display in our Patterson Window starting next week is “Field Trips: Photographing Away,” a tribute exhibition to the late Grossmont College photography professor David Wing. This exhibition showcases work by 15 of Professor Wing’s former Grossmont students.

“What all my students had in common was curiosity — unteachable but essential for any kind of exploration. I offered few formal field trips, but in time these experiences accumulated with students, colleagues, family, and friends. All who joined me found something with their own cameras that none of the others did; whatever their previous training or ultimate goals, they could crystallize their personal experience into wonderful photographs. This exhibition is for all those who went out with me and found their own way.”

Hope everyone’s enjoying summer break! ☀️

If you’ve been on campus, you may have noticed the artwork in our Window Display - work from 78 students across both Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 Sculpture I classes, taught by Professor Kaiya Rainbolt.

For this project, titled “My Neighborhood Project (Bas Reliefs)” Sculpture I students were asked to make an abstract representation of either their current neighborhood, a past neighborhood, or a fantasy neighborhood. After compiling research images, sketches and participating in group discussions, students determined their design course to create a multi-component sculptural wall piece. Sculpture students learned the methods/history of bas-relief (or low relief), working with plastilina (modeling clay), latex mold-making techniques, the creation of a mother mold, and plaster casting. In addition, the students learned about color theory, techniques for finishing/coloring plaster casts, and how to mount them into a finished wall piece.

The work represents local neighborhoods across the county, the country, and the world, and the variety in this compilation reflects the diversity of the students in our college community.

This semester we have a tie! 👔

During our reception last night, we had the pleasure of giving out 14 awards-of-merit to exceptional student artworks on display and throughout the evening, reception attendees had the opportunity to vote on one final award, The People’s Choice Award. Thank you to all who participated and your votes have been counted. For the first time, the Spring 2026 People’s Choice Award is going to two students…

First, Lyric Howard for their bold, eye-catching digital collage titled “The Doggy Bag”, created in PHOT 199 - Special Students in Photography Class with instructors Aaron Serafino & Paul Turounet.

AND to Ray Greenberg for their beautifully layered, multi-panel painting titled “Self Centered”, produced in ART 222 - Painting IV Class with instructor Jennifer Bennett.

Congratulations Lyric and Ray - please stop by the gallery soon to pick up your awards! If you have artwork on display in the Spring 2026 Student Art Exhibition, don’t forget to pick up your work this Friday or Monday, May 29 & June 1, from 10am-2pm either day.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Spring 2026 Student Art Exhibition reception and award ceremony last night. It was the perfect send-off for our final show of the year.

Congrats to all our award winners and every student with work on display. We loved celebrating YOU!

The exhibition is on display for only two more days and closes this Thursday at 4pm - don’t miss your last chance to see it!
