“In March of 2020, a call to action for face masks was heard and a cadre of everyday women, girls and even men, joined together to sew masks for our survival against our newest enemy the corona virus. Along the way, these handmade masks protected many from the virus, but the coverings could not silence the injustice that this smallest microbe was slowly and systematically eating away at what many thought to be a united nation.”

“Unmasking America visualizes the voices of the unheard, the unseen, and each represents the under belly of a nation thrown into chaos by an invisible corona anointed squarely on one man who believes he is king. We can be the home of the free, but we must be brave and speak up.” -Suda House

Spanning eight @grossmontedu departments, the #GROSSMONTOPEN surveys the creative efforts of our faculty and staff during the past year and a half of operating remotely. The rich and candid charcoal portraits shown here were created by Spanish professor Ruth Fátima Navarro from the #worldlanguagesdept.

“Ruth is a self-taught pencil artist who finds great pleasure in relying on such basic tools as charcoal, graphite pencils, and powder to create her drawings. Her background in Sumi-e, monochromatic black ink Japanese painting, is at the root of her attraction to black and white charcoal and graphite pencil drawing. It has shaped her view of the creative process as a dynamic meditation that deepens her connection to each subject she draws.”

The gallery is currently open Monday-Thursday from 10am-5pm. Please email [email protected] to schedule a visit. More information can be found on the gallery website (link in bio).

“Mark A Day Project - July”
by Christopher Lahti

“At the start of 2021, I began a daily sketchbook project called Mark A Day Project. The project scope structures a regular art-making practice by creating daily sketchbook pages. Each page is collected in monthly volumes and has a dedicated, pre-chosen theme. My adherence to each theme is often loose as I prefer to follow a creative momentum lead by visual patterns and image construction.  When I find my pace slowing, usually after a 3-5 day period, I rely on the theme to help find a new direction.”

“While each page in these sketchbooks involves an effort beyond a simple mark, I approach the project as a format for creative exploration of both concepts and materials.  The pages do span in their range of quality and ex*****on, but they have each allowed me to work through visual ideas and continue learning what does and does not work.”

I studied with most of the teachers in art classes at Grossmont, at SD State, and SF State. Hyde was one of the worst teachers I had in those days. Like a Drill Sargent making us use powder puffs and graphite, a medium almost no one uses (for a reason). We were made to jump through her hoop. I got little practical experience. Art was totally intellectualized, but in a superficial way. Then, we moved on to tightly controlled Guache. No drawing or painting skills taught. Expressionism would get an F. Her talks passed around lots of artists names without going into any depth. She loved to say "Old Masters." I can't recall a single woman artist mentioned. Subjective lines were all important, but not historical context or philosophy. Never was the whole big picture of why we make art and where is was going. We just got mentions of who was "important." On the other hand, Mr Lucas was a real poet of words and his Art History Classes were a real inspiration. The Gallery should have had his name.
