This semester we have a tie! đź‘”

During our reception last night, we had the pleasure of giving out 14 awards-of-merit to exceptional student artworks on display and throughout the evening, reception attendees had the opportunity to vote on one final award, The People’s Choice Award. Thank you to all who participated and your votes have been counted. For the first time, the Spring 2026 People’s Choice Award is going to two students…

First, Lyric Howard for their bold, eye-catching digital collage titled “The Doggy Bag”, created in PHOT 199 - Special Students in Photography Class with instructors Aaron Serafino & Paul Turounet.

AND to Ray Greenberg for their beautifully layered, multi-panel painting titled “Self Centered”, produced in ART 222 - Painting IV Class with instructor Jennifer Bennett.

Congratulations Lyric and Ray - please stop by the gallery soon to pick up your awards! If you have artwork on display in the Spring 2026 Student Art Exhibition, don’t forget to pick up your work this Friday or Monday, May 29 & June 1, from 10am-2pm either day.

Last chance, Griffins đź‘€

Today is the final day to view “Second Nature” a solo exhibition from San Diego-based photographer, Alfred Pagano. We also want to extend a sincere thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday for a wonderful artist talk.

Showcasing images drawn from Pagano’s photography book of the same name, this exhibition explores the complex relationships between animals, humans, and the environments we share. Through a series of striking black and white photographs, Pagano reflects on how the natural world continually adapts to human influence, and how animals, whether dead or alive, can reveal deeper truths about the social and environmental conditions that shape our world.

Don’t miss it - photographer Alfred Pagano returns to campus next week for an artist talk!

Join us Wednesday, April 22 at 1pm in the Hyde Art Gallery for a deeper look into Second Nature, our current exhibition of Pagano’s work. This striking body of work explores the shifting line between the natural world and human intervention. Through his lens, familiar landscapes become something more complex - inviting us to question what feels real, altered, or somewhere in between.

This lecture is FREE and open to the public. For more information about Second Nature, visit www.hydeartgallery.com or use the link in our bio.

The Hyde Art Gallery is excited to announce our next exhibition of Spring 2026, “Second Nature,” an exhibition of photographs by San Diego-based photographer Alfred Pagano.

Pagano describes nature as something constantly in flux - living systems that either adapt and survive, or disappear. In contrast, what he refers to as “Second Nature” is the human-made world, the landscapes and environments profoundly altered by our actions. Within this space, animals become powerful subjects, reflecting the ways humans use, control, and coexist with other living beings.

“Second Nature” will be on display at the gallery from March 23 through April 23. An opening reception is scheduled for Tuesday, March 24, from 4-6pm and the artist will return to Grossmont College on Wednesday, April 22 for an artist talk. All Hyde Art Gallery exhibitions and events are free and open to the public.
