Explore Wisconsin’s history through the voices of Indigenous leaders.

Join author Carol Cornelius at Mulva Cultural Center for a conversation about A History in Indigenous Voices and the nation-to-nation treaties that helped shape the region we call home.

In the early 1800s, the Menominee and Ho-Chunk Nations made land treaties with Indigenous nations from New York, including the Oneida Nation and the Six Nations Confederacy. Drawing on primary sources and the words of Indigenous leaders, Cornelius explores why these agreements were made, whose interests they served and how the federal government’s refusal to recognize them contributed to further loss of Indigenous lands.

Cornelius, Oneida/Stockbridge Munsee and Montauk, Turtle Clan, brings her experience as a scholar, educator and former area manager for the Oneida Cultural Heritage Department to this exploration of Indigenous history and sovereignty.
