Happy Friday!

Is anyone planning to go boating this weekend?

Love this postcard called "Boatmen's Paradise".

Fish Creek has always been a great spot for boating and fishing. The postcard shows some interesting boats, including rowboats, a Chris-Craft, a Sea-Lancer, a fishing tug, and lots of cottages along the shore.

Tell us what you see.

Ukulele Society at Noble Square

September 1st, 3:00 - 5:00 pm

Come have some fun, sing along, and bring a chair to enjoy an afternoon at
Noble Square. The Ukulele Society of Door County will play well-known
songs from the past hundred years, including music by Hank Williams, Bob
Dylan, the Beatles, and Bruno Mars. We invite you to join us, sing along, and
enjoy your favorite tunes.

The ukulele is a small, four-string instrument that looks a bit like a guitar. It
became popular in Hawaii in the 1880s and was inspired by Portuguese
instruments. Its nickname, “jumping flea,” comes from the Hawaiian words
uke, meaning flea, and lele, meaning jump or fly. This name describes the
fast finger movements players use on the strings.

Come to downtown Fish Creek and join the fun. The Ukulele Society has
been playing music together for over ten years and welcomes new members
every year. If you love music, consider joining this growing club.

Fish Creek in picturesque Door County Wis.

Imagine it’s 1958 and our waterfront looks quite different from today.

There was the Schreibers Rose Garden, a stone wall by the boat launch, trees lining the east side of the dock, and classic cars and boats all around.

Anything we missed?

Do you remember when "Thumbs Up Riders" visited Noble Square and held a live horseshoeing event?

We enjoy looking back and thinking about the amazing people in our community who give their time to share old trades still practiced today.

There are many reasons visitors come to the Alexander Noble House.

Built in 1875, this Greek Revival farmhouse stands at Fish Creek’s busiest crossroads and was home to three generations of the Noble family. When you step inside, you’ll feel like you’ve gone back to the late 1800s, with Victorian mourning traditions, real period clothing, and interesting artifacts all around you.

One of the most interesting displays is Victorian Hair Art. This type of artwork began because people wanted to keep a piece of their loved ones close. Hair is delicate and lasts a long time, staying with us much like love does.

Recognized as both a National and State Historic Place, the museum is full of treasures that make history feel real. Each visit offers something new to discover and helps you connect with the stories that shaped our community.

Visit soon, Tuesdays-Sundays, 10:00am - 3:00pm.

Are you ready to rock?! 🤘

Join us Tuesday, August 18th at Noble Square Park for an afternoon of 50s - 80s rock hits from The Cherry Tones, one of Door County's favorite local bands. We’re excited to welcome them back to Concerts in the Park this year. The trio features David Cavanaugh on guitar, Steve Gomoll on drums, and Mike Bacsi on bass, with special guest vocals by Mary Gomoll. Their energetic vintage rock ‘n’ roll will make your afternoon at Noble Square memorable.

A dive into the history of the life preserver, or lifejacket, shows that it has been around since 1854. It was also called a swimming vest. It was invented because volunteers needed something flexible to wear while rowing boats on rescue missions during storms.

Many materials were tested to find the best option for lifejackets. Some early versions used air pockets, but these could be punctured easily. Horsehair and rushes helped them float but were not strong or waterproof enough. Baobab and balsa wood floated well but cost too much.

Eventually, a man named Captain Ward discovered that sewing thin strips of cork into a canvas vest worked well. The lifejackets came in two sizes for lifeboat crew members, but they were also big enough to fit over a casualty’s head and shoulders. They proved their worth during a well-known rescue in 1861.

Life preservers have been around for a long time and have improved over the years, but most importantly, they save lives.
