Alumni Artist Spotlight – Zach Nash

Shoutout to the Vista The Vista and student journalist Hannah Aukema for their recent coverage of the Central Alumni Exhibition!

Zach is featured heavily in the article where he discusses how an early love of photography led him to pursue a degree in Print Journalism at Central:

' “I was starting to find a path of documenting and storytelling,” Nash said.

During college, Nash bought a Canon AE-1 and added a Nikon FE. He took some photojournalism classes and spent many hours in the University of Central Oklahoma’s darkroom [. . .].

Nash served as the editor-in-chief of the Vista, UCO’s newspaper, and interned with Permission Hill, a magazine published by what was then called the Cowboy Hall of Fame.

Nash’s photography style was shaped by his time working in large and small newsrooms. Street and documentary photography, capturing everyday moments of life both where he lives and where he travels. '

Read the rest of the article for free online: https://ucentralmedia.com/uco-melton-gallery-features-alumni-in-exhibition/ or using the link in our stories!

Zach Nash graduated from Central in 2004. You can see two of Zach’s pieces, including this piece, “Untitled” (2024), in the Central Alumni Exhibition from Aug. 17–Sept. 25.

There will be a public reception this Thursday, Sept. 3, from 5–7 p.m. Complimentary parking is available in UCO Lot 7 and light refreshments provided. 🖼️ 🍪

Alumni Artist Spotlight – Darci Lenker

What do embroidery and outer space have in common? 🪡 🪐

One is incredibly small and the other impossibly big, but our understanding of both is always rapidly expanding and changing! Recently, fine art embroidery has radically redefined the medium. Hyper-complex and realistic embroidery art is sometimes even referred to as “needle painting” due to its incredible detail.

In August 2022, NASA also redefined how we viewed the Pillars of Creation, a colossal formation of gas and dust inside the Eagle Nebula. The Pillars had previously been photographed in 1995 by the Hubble Telescope, but a new image from the James Webb Space Telescope Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) repainted them in a kaleidoscope of detail and color.

Darci Lenker graduated from Central in 2002. Her incredibly detailed, hand-embroidered version of the Pillars of Creation was even featured by NASA for World Embroidery Day 2023!

You can see the piece "Pillars of Creation (James Webb Space Telescope)" in the Central Alumni Exhibition from Aug. 17–Sept. 25.

Gallery Hours are Mon.–Thurs. 12-5, Fri. 12-3 and other times by appointment.

Alumni Artist Spotlight - Ben Stookey

Have you ever imagined your own world complete with characters, creatures, and landscapes? Maybe it even had it's own language and cuisine?

If so, you may have created your own Paracosm! Paracosms are fantasy worlds full of rich details. Some examples of famous literary paracosms include:

🦁 Narnia "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe" by C.S. Lewis (1950)

💍 Middle-Earth "Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkien (1954-55)

🐇 Wonderland from "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll (1865)

Ben Stookey graduated from Central in 2016 with two undergraduate degrees, a BFA in Painting and a BA in Art Education.

You can see his piece "Paracosm" in the Central Alumni Exhibition from Aug. 17–Sept. 25.

Gallery Hours are Mon.–Thurs. 12-5, Fri. 12-3 and other times by appointment.

Feel free to share your favorite paracosm in the comments!
