New artist introduction!! Meet Jasper Cowley!✨

Jasper Cowley of Wildlands Pottery began exploring clay as an artistic medium over a decade ago. His initial draw to ceramics was sculptural work, but after taking a wheel-throwing class, he fell in love with the concept of incorporating artistry into utilitarian pieces. Since then, he’s been consistently potting and experimenting with the breadth of form, decoration, and energy that clay can transform into.

Jasper enjoys bringing a playful spirit to his practice, while staying grounded in mostly functional forms like mugs, plates, and jars. His work exhibits a wide range of techniques, with each one-of-a-kind piece illustrating the evolving nature of his creative process.

With an emphasis on bold textures, earthy glazes, and a touch of whimsy, he aims to make ceramic vessels that are not only visually beautiful, but delightful to hold and utilize. He hopes the uniqueness of each of his creations will speak to their user and provide enchantment.

Artist Introduction! Meet Bob Green. We are honored to have you!✨

“I have been a potter for over thirty years and have an MFA in ceramics from Southern Illinois University Edwardville. I was the resident potter at the Vermont State Craft center for 8 years and during that period I received the state’s individual artist grant. I show my work nationally in galleries, and teach workshops on Raku and Alternative pottery firing techniques. My work is in the Bennington Museum, as part of their permanent collection, and my work is featured in several books on Raku including 500 Raku, and Mastering Raku.”

Artist introduction!✨Meet Helen Thelen!

“My love of pottery started when I was in elementary school in Amherst. Ms. Melonis had a clay unit every year which was the highlight of my school year. I loved the feel of the clay, creating something, and picking colors for glazing. It was so exciting to take pieces home to display in our house. I was unable to work with clay again until 2015 when I signed up for a pottery class and I’ve never looked back. I found such joy of making things I could use at home, or gift to family and friends.
I’ve apprenticed for 2 local potters and then started teaching in 2019. I love seeing students get the “ah-ha!” moment when all the steps click and they have work that they can use themselves and be proud of making.
I have been an artist in residence, and continue to take classes with other potters to expand my knowledge and push my boundaries. I teach classes at Northampton Pottery where I’ve been working for over 6 years. I’m also owned by 4 black cats which is why my business is called Black Cats Pottery. I am now a full time potter.
Pottery is meant to be used and enjoyed. Colors, shape, and size are all factors that I think about when I’m creating my work which is functional pottery for everyday use in the home. Each piece is thrown on a wheel or hand built with love so that the pottery can be enjoyed by the owner. No two pieces are alike; the work you purchase is a one of a kind pot, supporting a local artist.”
