“Stoned” in the Black Rock Desert, Day #2
Home to the Burning Man Festival, the Black Rock’s scope and size is mind bending. 200 to 400 square miles of nothing, made for a very challenging week of art and photography. Photo #1 Just Nothing: Made from the middle of the ancient sea bed Black Rock Playa which is the only time I’ve ever seen the curve of the Earth while standing on the ground. #2 Desert Sunset: looking off along the Black Rock Mountain Range towards Black Rock Mountain (photo center) at 4,000 plus feet high looks like an ant hill at around 15 miles away. This is near where we camped for the week. #3 Rising Moon: A full moon rise over a distant Black Rock Mountain Range, which leads right and ending with the distant Black Rock Mountain. Temperatures at night turned so cold that water bottles froze after a day of heat and sweating in hot sun.

“Stoned” in the Black Rock Desert, Day #1
With the Burning Man Festival taking place this week in the Black Rock, I bring to you over the next few days my Collection of photos made over a week of playing in the desert in 2008.The Black Rock, an ancient sea bed of 200 to 400 square miles is in the very remote NW corner of Nevada. It is doubtful that Burning Man with its 70,000ish attendees would even be noticed out there. Here is my first three. Photo #1 has Black Rock Mountain at around 3,900 feet tall, hence the deserts name, standing front and center, 10 to 15 miles away from me. To the left extends the Black Rock Mountain Range and desert, to the right is the even more remote Black Rock Wilderness, where mastodon skeletons are still found. Photo #2 is made at dawn looking west at a retreating Earth’s shadow over the Calico Mountains ranging from 4,000 to 8,500 feet tall, being viewed from the middle of the Black Rock’s Playa and around 10 to 15 miles away. Photo #3 has my friend @ on top of our vehicle to give a perspective of how huge the Black Rock is. Photographing there was my biggest challenge ever. No leading lines creating perspective. No layers for adding depth. No clouds mid day to finesse any composition. More to come. Enjoy!
