James Crawford Thom, Parrot and Chrysanthemum, Oil on canvas, 42 x 23.5 inches, Signed “Thom” lower right. Hudson River School style landscapist and genre painter James Crawford Thom was born in New York City in 1835, though he grew up on a farm just north of the City in Ramapo, New York. He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City as an eighteen-year-old before going to Paris, where he studied with Camille Corot, Thomas Couture and Henri Picou. A seven-year interlude in London, 1866-1873, led to exhibitions and increasing awareness of his work there, and in the latter year to exhibitions in America that encouraged the artist and his family to return to New York City. They later moved to Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, where the artist died of pneumonia in 1898.

Edward Henry Potthast (American, 1857 - 1927); A Family Outing; Oil on board, 12 x 16 inches; Signed E Potthast lower left.
A painter most remembered most for his beach scenes of carefree atmosphere, Edward Potthast was one of the significant 19th-century American artists from Cincinnati, which at the time of his birth was a burgeoning art center and a place of refuge for German immigrants including the Potthast family.
He first studied at the McMicken School of Design and at the Cincinnati Academy, and then went to Europe briefly before becoming established in his native city as a lithographer and illustrator.
In 1892, he moved to New York City where he won the Clarke Prize at the National Academy of Design and many other honors.
His studio was primarily in New York City, but in 1912, he spent extensive time in Europe where he enrolled in Academies in Munich, Antwerp and Paris. He was an exceedingly private person who died at his easel.
