During WWII the Boston & Maine Railroad maintained a ticket office at Fort Devens. After V-E Day, daily discharges reached a peak of 1,900 and extra ticket sellers were hired. Simone Drouin (later St. Arnaud) of Lowell was one such employee. She kept the patches given to her by servicemen in this tin.

This February 1, 1918 telegram is hard to read due to fading, but was sent from a soldier at Camp Devens to his ‘sweetheart’ and reads: ‘Will be home tomorrow early….Have all things ready to perform said matter.’ What ever could they be planning?…

Cornelius Harrington (1890-1961) of Brookline, MA kept a detailed record of his time in the Army during WWI. After training at Camp Upton in New York, he arrived at Camp Devens in June 1918 and was placed in Co. B, 301st Infantry Regiment, 76th Division. He sailed overseas with his unit in July before being reassigned in September 1918 to Co. F 111th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division.

Cornelius wrote: "That night we hiked up to the front and went into trenches on the 15th of Sept. I stayed in those trenches 7 days and we only had six meals in the seven days and those we got at night between the hours of 12 & 2 A.M."

Cornelius was in the hospital in France from October 23 to February 16, 1919 after suffering from Influenza and "trench foot." He returned to the United States for additional recovery and was discharged from Camp Devens on March 25, 1919.

Thank you to his family for donating his uniform and sharing his story.
