A Des Moines native now living and working in Brooklyn, NY, artist Jackie Hilmes creates paintings that read like meditations. Working intuitively in oil and pastel, she builds compositions through layered marks that represent movement, memory and emotion.
Her current body of work draws inspiration from daily life including the visual language of the subway: fractured typography, repetition, rhythm and motion translated into painterly form. As part of our exhibition, “The City That Never Sleeps,” Jackie Hilmes brings a sense of urban energy depicted through a lens of abstraction.
