Beefy Babe by Norman Bluhm | Steven Vail Fine Arts

"Today a lot of painters, and a lot of abstract painters, don’t draw at all. They don’t even know how to draw. I’ve always thought that one of the great elements of great art is drawing. From the Renaissance to Matisse and Picasso, and even the Impressionists — every one of the greater painters could draw.

I think as you get older, your knowledge naturally increases. Your desires become, and I don’t mean this in a religious context, more spiritual. The work has become more spiritual. The desire is to create another kind of space, another form of color".

Recently we have relocated from Historic Teachout building in East Village to the Fitch Building on Gateway West. The architecture firms spiller. and IDEAA converted a dim, dark raw space on the ground level of Des Moines Fitch Building into a beautiful, light-filled gallery. Located a block from the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Garden and sheltered from the city’s chaotic streets, the new location of Steven Vail Fine Arts – Project Room is a comprised of a main exhibition salon, an art research library and an auxiliary exhibition space which will feature works from our collection. Executed by Christensen Development, the finished gallery is a beautiful, modern space that offers a retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life.
