So i have a lot of friends who are Replacements fans.. obviously including myself.. I have a fun little story that for some reason I just thought of out of the blue.
After Roxy Scot ended officially, Paul Wright and myself were "recruited" by our former booking agent to join a newly formed Minneapolis hair band., the band was to be made up of members of other bands and after a few rehearsals we were supposed to start playing gigs ..
After 2 days Paul wasn't feeling it so he drove back to Iowa , I think he was getting ready to attend ISU soon.. I stuck around and gave it a chance renting a god awful hotel room for $25 a night.
We were placed in rehearsal room in Metro Studios, a downtown warehouse district recording studio with many credits.
So myself and 4 other players start jamming and learning songs, at times we could barely hear ourselves over our "neighbors" in a room across the hall of this basement studio.
Turns out, the "neighbors" in the other room were The Replacements.. now I was still only maybe 20.. and was stuck with
hair band tunnel vision, I only "sorta" knew who they were from 1 or 2 videos on MTV, but a few times when we were taking a break I'd see this one particular guy out in the hall and he was friendly and we talked, i asked him about places to fish close by .. as i was planning on being there awhile, he told me about some places to try and was cool and even drew me a little map.
After about a week trying out this band I decided it wasn't for me, and went to get my stuff out of the studio but it was locked.. kind of panicked I was lucky to find my fishing buddy friend, who finally introduced himself as Tommy. Tommy was able to get a key from someone in charge and even helped me carry out my Carvin stack and put it in my Chevy Citation. He shook my hand and said good luck man.. and yes, it was Tommy Stinson. All that time the legendary Tommy Stinson of the Mats and me a punk kid who didn't really know who he was. Tommy was the only one of the band that I saw.. but I did hear what I assume was the full band rehearsing a few times. LOUD and with tons of feedback.
Seems like 2 lifetimes ago now .
