GRASSCLOTH!!!!

I will always choose a hand-painted wall or mural when I can… but if you can’t, grasscloth!

This is our little powder room at AJG + AJS. I just love what grasscloth does to a room. The texture, the color, the way it feels on the wall… it’s just good.

We have so many new colors right now and I keep finding another one I want to use somewhere.

Back to Florida after such a fantastic trip home to Baltimore. ❤️

Got to spend time with my besties… laughing, catching up, eating, talking and just being together.

Baltimore will always feel like home to me, and the people are a big part of why.

It’s been many, many years since I painted an oil portrait.

Portrait painting is actually what I majored in at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. After I graduated, my life took a harsh turn. I made some choices that landed me in a funky spot… actually, several funky spots.

I’ve always been an artist. I’ve always made my living being creative. But somewhere along the way, I lost my ability to paint people. The darkness took over, and for a long time that was what I could paint.

I still dabble in that darkness. Her name is Fifi, and I keep her separate. 😂

I’m talking about my studio practice here—not the gallery or boutique. Those are different spaces and obviously very public.

Recently, we moved studios again. Our creative space had become too public, and I realized I just didn’t feel comfortable working there anymore. I needed a place where I could disappear a little. Make a mess. Make bad paintings. Figure things out without anyone watching.

And something has shifted.

I’m painting in oils again.
I’m painting portraits again.

YIKES. Painting is hard again. 😂🎨

So I just keep showing up. Keep looking. Keep painting. Keep mixing mud on the palette until eventually something starts to happen.

Here’s a quick portrait of a dear friend who sat for me.

Painting is like eating or breathing or bathing. It feels necessary to my existence.

I’m grateful to be doing it again. ❤️🎨

There’s something about watching a painting you’ve considered, constructed, layered, pulled apart and rebuilt finally leave the studio.

Every figure, every mark, every interruption is there for a reason.

Women, color, memory, beauty, tension — layered until the painting says exactly what I want it to say.

And now she’s ready.
