The Common Buckeye butterfly is notable for its large round patterns on the back of its wings, looking like eyes. These eyespots can confuse or frighten predators like birds or lizards, making them think it's the eyes of a larger animal. Enjoy the Buckeye and the rest of our wonderful butterflies in the Science Center's Butterfly Station.

Mark your calendars for this Thursday night! A deep partial lunar eclipse will be visible here in Virginia, with 96% of the Moon entering Earth’s darkest shadow at its peak. That means the Moon may take on the coppery-red appearance that gives a “Blood Moon” its name, and you won’t need any special glasses or equipment to watch it. Eclipse starts around 9:30 that night and reaches its peak just after midnight.

Starting in late summer and early fall, the monarch butterfly prepares for an extraordinary journey. These small insects migrate from across the US and Canada into Central Mexico where they wait out the winter months, a trip of up to 3,000 miles! Each day a monarch butterfly can fly 50-100 miles, taking about two months to complete the journey. Gardens and butterfly waystations like the one the Danville Science Center has outside the Butterfly Station allow wild monarchs a safe area to rest and feed as they find their way south.

Caterpillars are voracious eaters, consuming hundreds of times their body weight in just a few weeks to drastically increase their size! They need the energy for the dramatic changes that take place to turn into a butterfly while in the chrysalis stage. These hungry little black swallowtail caterpillars here in the Butterfly Station are looking close to moving on to the next step!
