Today the Danville Canal historic marker was unveiled. Thank you to DHS Director, Travis Hackworth and former DHS Director Karice LB for their continuing work to memorialize Danville’s history. Thanks also to the Womack Foundation, the Virginia Department of Historic Resources and the City of Danville.

We are sharing videos of the unique history that we hold in our archives. While our main exhibit is not currently open to the public, you can help us make our exhibits available.

There are a few ways you can help us:

3. You can support us by attending our events and programs. Just be sure to follow us for updates.

If you want to see some of our exhibits now, you can visit the History Hub to learn more about our community's history and culture. The History Hub is in the main lobby of River District Tower (the former Dan River Research Building) at 109 Bridge Street.

For over fifty years, the Danville Historical Society has safeguarded some of our city’s most unique and incredible stories. Now, we are seeking your help so we can protect your history for another fifty years.

Our historic building’s roof must be replaced — a project estimated at $60,000. Coincidentally, that’s about the same as Danville’s population. If every resident contributes just $1, together we can preserve the treasures of Danville for generations to come.

The Historical Society serves as the steward of thousands of irreplaceable paper records, photographs, film, and archival materials that document our community's rich history. These items are highly vulnerable to damage from heat, humidity, light exposure, and the natural effects of aging. Through professional cataloging, digitization, and preservation efforts, we can protect these fragile collections while making them accessible to researchers, students, and the public for generations to come.
