JOIN US ON SATURDAY, JUNE 6TH from 6PM - 9PM for the opening reception of LUMINARY by Demarcus McGaughey.

Through a striking new body of mixed media portraits and figurative works, McGaughey examines visibility, protection, ancestry, and the emotional architecture of becoming seen. Working with acrylic, pencil, and inherited fabrics from his grandmother’s quilt collection, McGaughey creates layered surfaces that merge personal history with contemporary portraiture. Each work carries traces of memory and lineage, transforming fabric into both material and metaphor. His figures appear illuminated from within, suspended between intimacy and monumentality. At the center of Luminary is a formative lesson passed down from the artist’s father, Michael McGaughey.

The exhibition serves as both a personal reckoning and a cultural offering. The works in Luminary reflect muses encountered abroad, as well as residents of Oak Cliff whose presence, style, and spirit continue to shape the artist’s visual language. Together, these portraits form a meditation on inner brilliance and collective humanity.

McGaughey's work is an important voice within contemporary figurative painting, bridging fashion, storytelling, and cultural memory with emotional precision and cinematic scale.

The Janette Kennedy Gallery is located inside of South Side on Lamar at 1409 Botham Jean Blvd. #105, Dallas TX 75215.

JOIN US on March 7, 2026 from 6PM-9PM for the opening reception of ELEVEN, a 500X member show.

ELEVEN brings together the work of eleven current members whose practices span media, scale, and perspective while sharing a commitment to experimentation and dialogue. The exhibition offers a snapshot of a collective in motion, reflecting the breadth and energy of the group at this moment in time.

Featuring works by Brinn Bailey, Monica Barrera, Bebos, Kiara Daniels, Peggy Espinel, Christina Bridges Glover, Emmar Grant, Jamila Mendez, Britney O***a, Ryan Stephens and Ashley Whitt.

ELEVEN highlights the range of voices shaping 500X today. Painting, sculpture, installation, drawing, video, photography, poetry, and mixed-media approaches intersect throughout the gallery, inviting viewers to move between distinct visual languages and conceptual frameworks.

Each artist contributes a personal lens informed by lived experience, material exploration, and critical reflection. Together, the works form an evolving conversation about presence, transformations, and the role of artist-run spaces as sites for risk-taking and growth.

At its core, ELEVEN is both an introduction and a reaffirmation — an introduction to the current membership and a reaffirmation of 500X’s mission to support diverse artistic practices. The exhibition stands as a collective portrait, continually reshaped by the artists who inhabit and define the space.

Gwen’s work explores hope as both a daily practice and a quiet form of resistance—finding beauty in chaos, honoring women’s creative lineage, and reframing stories that are ready to evolve. Through abstraction, crochet paintings, rock sculptures, and immersive installations, her work invites intimacy, reflection, and possibility.

This exhibition is also a celebration—of turning 65, of lived experience, of faith in the process, and of the belief that beauty can emerge from even the most tangled moments. Beauty here is layered, imperfect, and transformational.

The show runs January 3rd - January 31st.
