JOIN US ON SATURDAY, JUNE 6TH from 6PM - 9PM for the opening reception of LUMINARY by Demarcus McGaughey.
Through a striking new body of mixed media portraits and figurative works, McGaughey examines visibility, protection, ancestry, and the emotional architecture of becoming seen. Working with acrylic, pencil, and inherited fabrics from his grandmother’s quilt collection, McGaughey creates layered surfaces that merge personal history with contemporary portraiture. Each work carries traces of memory and lineage, transforming fabric into both material and metaphor. His figures appear illuminated from within, suspended between intimacy and monumentality. At the center of Luminary is a formative lesson passed down from the artist’s father, Michael McGaughey.
The exhibition serves as both a personal reckoning and a cultural offering. The works in Luminary reflect muses encountered abroad, as well as residents of Oak Cliff whose presence, style, and spirit continue to shape the artist’s visual language. Together, these portraits form a meditation on inner brilliance and collective humanity.
McGaughey's work is an important voice within contemporary figurative painting, bridging fashion, storytelling, and cultural memory with emotional precision and cinematic scale.
The Janette Kennedy Gallery is located inside of South Side on Lamar at 1409 Botham Jean Blvd. #105, Dallas TX 75215.
