From the Archive: Jesse Owens Family Collection

In 2022, Chris Owens – the great-nephew of legendary athlete Jesse Owens – generously donated a collection of photographs and personal items to the Museum. Among these are rare images capturing Jesse Owens in everyday moments, offering a glimpse into the life of this historic figure.

Pictured here are Jesse Owens and his wife Ruth Owens at Comiskey Park in Chicago, Illinois, on August 19, 1949. Ruth Owens holds a trophy awarded to Jesse Owens for finishing first in a nationwide poll on outstanding Black athletes.

As we mark the 90th anniversary of the Berlin Olympic Games this month, this collection is a timely reminder of his enduring legacy and the importance of preserving the human experience.

During World War II, as many Disney artists were called to serve in the military, the Studios faced unprecedented challenges in meeting production demands. In response, Disney began recruiting women to fill vital roles.

Prior to World War II, women were mostly limited to jobs in the Ink & Paint Department or secretarial work at the Walt Disney Studios. Now, many skilled women were entrusted with responsibilities that had previously been male-dominated, from camera operator to preliminary story development.

When the war ended, these women were integrated into all aspects of the Studio’s work. Paving the way for future generations of female artists.

The legacy of these women endures and serves as an important reminder for us on . Learn about the contributions of these women and more in our special exhibition, “The Walt Disney Studios and World War II.”

During World War II, more than 1,100 women broke barriers in aviation as members of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs), flying military aircrafts across the United States so male pilots were free for overseas combat.

Join us as historian Katherine Sharp Landdeck, Ph.D., author of “The Women with Silver Wings,” shares how she brought to life the remarkable stories of these aviators, from their rigorous training in Sweetwater, Texas, to the discrimination they faced and their long fight for recognition.

What do Gremlins have to do with women pilots during World War II?

Created by Disney for a (never made) film version of Roald Dahl’s The Gremlins, Fifinella was the female gremlin that symbolized the spirit and courage of female pilots embarking on hazardous missions.

Fifinella was adopted by the more than 1,100 women who served in the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) during World War II. The WASPs broke barriers in aviation, flying military aircraft across the U.S. freeing male pilots for combat. ​

From the Archive: Albert Carl Michaelis Jr. Family Collection

In 1936, a young man from Dallas set out for a whirlwind trip to Europe, including a stop at the Summer Olympics in Berlin. Albert Carl Michaelis, Jr., an amateur photographer, could never have imagined how important his photos of these historic games would become.

When the collection was donated in 2017, it included dozens of undeveloped rolls of film like this one showing an athlete during his attempt at the men’s pole vault for the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany, dated August 1936.

As we mark the 90th anniversary of the Berlin Olympic Games, we’re reminded that everyone plays a part in preserving history.

85 years ago the Kovno Ghetto in Lithuania was sealed, imprisoning 30,000 Jews.

Holocaust survivor Rosian Zerner was one of them. When the N***s invaded Lithuania, Zerner and her family were forced into the Kovno Ghetto and required to wear yellow stars marking them as Jews.

Her parents knew that they needed to act quickly to save Zerner. Here, she recounts how her parents became her first rescuers.

What does it mean to witness history in real time from behind a camera lens? Narrated by Liev Schreiber, “They Fight with Cameras” features wartime footage of decorated U.S. Army Signal Corps combat cameraman Walter Rosenblum.

From the D-Day landings on Omaha Beach to the liberation of Dachau Concentration Camp, Rosenblum and his fellow Signal Corps cameramen documented the war in Europe with skill, empathy, and unflinching courage.

A live virtual talkback with producers Nina Rosenblum and Dan Allentuck will follow the film.
