Did you know that the Underground Railroad in Coshocton lasted until 1865?

During the 19th century, Coshocton had a large abolitionist movement - with four known Underground Railroad routes running through the area. Local families and residents quietly opened their homes, shared resources, and helped freedom seekers continue their journey north, often at great personal risk.

The story of the Underground Railroad in Coshocton did not end when President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. While that historic order declared freedom for enslaved people in Confederate states, the reality was that many Americans remained enslaved long afterward. Freedom on paper did not always mean freedom in practice. In much of the South, enslaved people would not learn of their freedom - or be able to claim it - until Union forces arrived and enforced the law.

Juneteenth marks the moment when that promise of freedom finally reached many of the last enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865 - more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

As we celebrate Juneteenth, we honor those who endured slavery and fought for their freedom, and the individuals in communities like Coshocton who chose to help others pursue liberty.

Coshocton's Underground Railroad heritage and the story of Juneteenth are connected by a common thread: the belief that freedom belongs to everyone.

Anthropology is the scientific study of humankind, examining our cultures, societies, and behaviors across time and place, aiming to understand the full scope of what makes us human. Through our 2026 summer children's program, discover how people long ago used natural materials to create baskets, pottery, cloth, and more! Through fun hands-on activities like weaving, painting symbols, and crafting, kids will explore how humans lived, created, and shared their stories across time. Join us every Friday from May 29th - July 3rd, 10:00 - 11:00 AM for an exciting journey through time and culture! 🔍✨

This summer program is geared toward children ages 3 – 5 and 6 – 12. Admission is $6 per child ($1 per week per child). Families will be allowed to explore the Museum after each session. Space is limited and reservations are required. Please register by visiting jhmuseum.org/summer, calling 740-622-8710, or visiting the museum. Make it Like the Past is presented in conjunction with the Coshocton Public Library, Clary Gardens, Historic Roscoe Village, and the Pomerene Center for the Arts through the Unearth a Story program. Cool summer programming will be offered throughout the month of June and July at each location. The Grand Tour is supported by the Charles E. and Dorothy S. Bechtol Fund and The Ohio Arts Council. ​The Ohio Arts Council. Today we celebrate 95 years of the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum! 🎉

Since opening its doors on May 8, 1931, the museum has shared stories, art, history, and culture with generations of visitors. Founded through the generous bequest of Coshocton natives David M. and John H. Johnson, the museum began as a memorial to their Johnson and Humrickhouse ancestors and a home for the incredible collections they gathered during their travels across the world.

From American Indian baskets and beadwork to Asian fine arts, European ceramics, local history artifacts, and prehistoric Ohio tools and points, our collections continue to grow thanks to the support and generosity of our community.

For 95 years, our mission has remained the same: to inspire creativity, the love of learning, and an appreciation of diverse cultures and local heritage. Thank you to everyone who has visited, donated, volunteered, supported, and shared in our journey over the decades.

Here’s to celebrating our past and looking ahead to the future together! ❤️
