This Day in History
October 1
Two of USS Lexington’s five Navy classifications were assigned on October 1—one in 1952 and another exactly ten years later, in 1962.
USS Lexington (CV-16) entered service in 1943 as an aircraft carrier and served in the Pacific during World War II. In 1947, the Navy took her out of service and placed her in reserve.
On October 1, 1952, while still in reserve, she was redesignated USS Lexington (CVA-16), an attack aircraft carrier. She underwent modernization and returned to active service in 1955, operating in that role for the next several years.
On October 1, 1962, her classification changed again to USS Lexington (CVS-16) as the Navy prepared her for a new assignment: training aviators to take off from and land on an aircraft carrier. She began that work at Pensacola in December 1962 and continued training aviators for the rest of her Navy career.
