K Space Contemporary was established by key members of K Space Art Studios, a cooperative art studio formed in 1995 founded by Erick and Raychelle Schaudies. The “K” in our name refers to the building’s historic roots as the Kress Five & Dime store built in 1917. From it’s inception in 2001 to early 2007, the non-profit organization operated out of a 700 square foot gallery located within K Space Art Studios on the third floor of the building. After reorganizing in 2006, K Space Contemporary began plans to open a more accessible and visible community-based facility. The new street-level venue, K Space Contemporary, opened October 13, 2007. K Space Contemporary is the oldest alternative art space in the Coastal Bend region. The primary goal of the organization is exhibiting emerging and mid-career artists from South Texas. K Space fills a void, not met by other local organizations, by providing a forum for under-represented artists whose works are experimental, non-commercial, or difficult to exhibit due to unusual installation requirements or site-specific ideas.

This week’s spotlight gift artists are two women, twin sisters, Nora Verdin & Nola Guajardo!! Both of them not only have one-of-a-kind works for sale in our gift shop, but are also our upcoming exhibitors in our Clower Gallery for “Colores Mi Vida.” 🖼️ | Nola Guajardo Nora Verdin

The sisters’ work shares a profound connection to the place they have called home since childhood. We want to thank all volunteers who attended our Paper Flower Workshops. 🌼

Thanks to you, we made hundreds of flowers to decorate and adorn ofrendas for this year's Día de los Mu***os festival! As well as creating beautiful paper flower banners to hang throughout the festival. We are truly grateful and inspired by our community's help and support. 😊💙

This month we have an amazing line up of events that are enjoyable for everyone! Starting off with HEB Craft Night! Bring your next project, or come learn a new hobby with us! During this Craft Night we will also be hosting a Volunteer Night where we invite the public to make paper flowers with us to decorate with for the Dia de los Mu***os Festival. Can’t make it Thursday night? No problem! We will be holding two more Volunteer days for the community to come and help out. Next up we have Art Walk, where we have our Dia Youth Art Exhibition opening in the Starr Gallery, and our 2nd Saturday Used Art Supply Sale. Mid October, “Colores Mi Vida” featuring works by Nola Guajardo and Nora Verdin, and The Extravagancia de Piñatas Competition will be on view. Lastly, we have our biggest event of the year, Dia de los Mu***os, a night of celebration, family, and remembrance. We are excited for the events to come, so stop by and visit, and join in on the fun! 💙✨

Yesterday, our staff was hard at work setting up our annual La Palmera Ofrenda! 💀🕯🌼
We're encouraging the community to celebrate Día de los Mu***os with us! Bring a copy of your photo (not the original) to the La Palmera security office, located on the upper level across from Great American Cookies. La Palmera staff will add the photos to the display as they are received. 🧡

This beautiful ofrenda is officially up for shoppers to honor their loved ones now through November 2nd in West Court next to Vans. |

*Photos no larger than 5”x7”. Frames and photos will not be returned but will be safely kept to be added to next year’s display.*

We will not be open for Art Walk! ☹️🌧

Due to the possibility of poor weather conditions, we will not be open Friday Night. Downtown Management District has postponed and rescheduled October Art Walk for the 9th, next Friday. |

As for vendors, we will be reaching out via email about the rescheduling information and discussing whether you can/can't attend the October 9th Art Walk.

So save the date, and we hope to see you all next Friday. Stay dry! 🎨💙☔
