K Space Contemporary was established by key members of K Space Art Studios, a cooperative art studio formed in 1995 founded by Erick and Raychelle Schaudies. The “K” in our name refers to the building’s historic roots as the Kress Five & Dime store built in 1917. From it’s inception in 2001 to early 2007, the non-profit organization operated out of a 700 square foot gallery located within K Space

Art Studios on the third floor of the building. After reorganizing in 2006, K Space Contemporary began plans to open a more accessible and visible community-based facility. The new street-level venue, K Space Contemporary, opened October 13, 2007. K Space Contemporary is the oldest alternative art space in the Coastal Bend region. The primary goal of the organization is exhibiting emerging and mid-career artists from South Texas. K Space fills a void, not met by other local organizations, by providing a forum for under-represented artists whose works are experimental, non-commercial, or difficult to exhibit due to unusual installation requirements or site-specific ideas.

Kinda chic if you came to visit 😘

Our operating hours are Wednesday-Saturday 11am - 5pm and Sunday 12 - 4pm! While the gallery is closed for installation, come visit and check out the amazing vendors in our gift shop! Featuring handmade, unique works by artists across the Coastal Bend, as well as a couple of out-of-city artists! 🎨✨

Welcome to Featured Artist Friday! 🎨✨

This week's spotlight gift shop artist is Jonathon C. Garza 🌹🌅 |

Garza is a Corpus Christi-based artist and educator! Jonathon C. Garza received his MFA in studio art from Texas A&M – Corpus Christi in 2025 with a focus in interdisciplinary art. He is currently an Adjunct Professor of Art at TAMU-CC.

Utilizing techniques from painting, printmaking, and ceramics, Garza layers and cross-pollinates processes to create large-scale works on canvas and in the round. His interdisciplinary approach links themes of interconnectivity, legacy, and resiliency through imagery sourced from intergenerational family gardening.

We're installing 3 new shows here at K Space Contemporary! Featuring artists from across the Coastal Bend. 🎨

First up in our Clower Gallery: Leandra Urrutia with "Constellations," where intuition, fiction, and personal mythology take shape in ceramic and mixed-media sculpture. Next, in the Starr Gallery: Claudia McDonald with "Imagine That...," an exhibition full of color, light, science, and imagination intersected within glass. Lastly, in the Project Space: "Have Your Cake & Paint It, Too!," featuring dessert-themed paintings by our talented teen artists from our Mural Arts Program!

The shows will be revealed on September 4th during Art Walk! You don't want to miss them. Save the date and see you there! 😉
