September 11, 2001 — Television sets across our country blared: “America Under Attack”! Twenty-five years later, it may be difficult to imagine a positive story coming out of the events of 9/11.
But in the days immediately following the attacks, the thoughtful actions of a Columbus senior citizen, Shirley Brooks Jones, helped inspire a Broadway play — "Come From Away", an award-winning musical by Irene Sankoff and David Hein that opened on March 12, 2017 and ran for 1669 performances.
"Come From Away" has played in Columbus as recently as last March at the Columbus Short North Theater where local theatergoers were captivated by the powerful Broadway musical of kindness and community in the face of adversity.
The play is based on the events in the Newfoundland town of Gander during the week of September 11, 2001. The immediate response to the horrific attacks that began in New York City at 8:46 a.m., was to close all U.S. airspace and order all aircraft, including incoming passenger planes, to land at the nearest airport. Over the North Atlantic, 38 planes, carrying approximately 7,000 passengers, were ordered to land at Gander International Airport.
