🗓 ON THIS DAY//OCTOBER 8, 1862: Union Maj. Gen. Don Carlos Buell’s Army of the Ohio and Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg’s Army of Mississippi clash at the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky. After back and forth fighting, the day ends with a Confederate tactical victory, but Bragg, short of men and supplies, is forced to retreat during the night. The battle ends Bragg’s offensive campaign into Kentucky. Buell’s three corps include 30 infantry regiments, five batteries of artillery and parts of two cavalry regiments from the Buckeye state. Today, the 148th Infantry Regiment (3rd Ohio); 174th Air Defense Artillery Regiment (5th Ohio), 112th Engineer Battalion (1st Ohio) and 134th Field Artillery Regiment (1st Ohio Light Artillery) are authorized to display a campaign streamer with Kentucky 1862 embroidered on it, signifying this campaign. This photo shows Pvt. John E. Anway of Company H, 101st Ohio Volunteer Infantry who participated in the Battle of Perryville. Anway enlisted on Aug. 9, 1862, just two months prior to the battle. The 101st Ohio was organized at Monroeville, Ohio and was assigned to the 31st Brigade (Carlin), 9th Division (Mitchell, III Corps, Army of the Ohio during the battle. Surles, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 8 October 1862, while serving with Company G, 2d Ohio Infantry, in action at Perryville, Kentucky, In the hottest part of the fire Private Surles stepped in front of his colonel to shield him from the enemy’s fire.

🗓 ON THIS DAY//OCTOBER 5, 1952: The 251st Cyberspace Engineering Installation Group is organized in Springfield, Ohio as the 251st Communications Group. The 251st is the oldest communications/cyber group in the U.S. Air Force. The group was redesignated as a cyberspace unit on May 1, 2014, and has the mission to command, organize, equip, train and administer assigned expeditionary cyberspace engineering installation and combat communication forces. 🎖 HALL OF VALOR//OCTOBER 4, 1862: The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Lieutenant Colonel Wager Swayne, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 4 October 1862, while serving with 43d Ohio Infantry, in action at Corinth, Mississippi, for conspicuous gallantry in restoring order at a critical moment and leading his regiment in a charge.

THIS MONTH IN OHIO NATIONAL GUARD HISTORY: OCTOBER 2026

In Through the Lens, Soldiers from the 2d Battalion, 174th Air Defense Artillery explain the details of the Stinger missile system to Ohio Gov. Bob Taft during a visit to Camp Perry, Ohio in October 1999 and Col. Donald Easley, outgoing commander of the 160th Air Refueling Group, addresses his unit during a change of command ceremony in October 1989; in Week in Review, the 251st Cyberspace Engineering Installation Group is organized in Springfield as the 251st Communications Group and the 37th Division begins its final offensive of World War I along a line near Olsene, Belgium; Hall of Valor honors Sgt. Ivin H. Dresbach of Company H, 166th Infantry, who was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for actions during the Meuse-Argonne campaign in France on Oct. 14, 1918, and Connecting to the Collections features the trunk used by Maj. Gen. Charles Farnsworth, commanding general of the 37th Division during World War I.

🗓 ON THIS DAY//OCTOBER 1, 1987: The 147th Regiment (Regional Training Institute) is constituted in the Ohio Army National Guard as Detachment 3 (Ohio Military Academy), Headquarters, State Area Command. While this date marks the formation of dedicated Army force structure for state military academies, Ohio began offering Officer Candiate School class in 1957. These acadamies were run by cadre and support staff who were pulled from other units across the state to operate the academy in addition to their primary military assignment and duties. In 1996, the detachments were reorganized under the regional training institute (RTI) model and the U.S. Army Center of Military History granted an exception to adopt regimental designations of former units in the state. The policy permitted the use of the numerical designation and the allotment of the heraldic items of the former units, but did not pass the lineage and honors of the former regiments to the respective RTI's.

🔍 CONNECTING TO THE COLLECTIONS//TAC OFFICER HELMET LINER: This helmet liner was worn by then 2d Lt. Neal O’Brien while he served as a TAC officer for the Officer Candidate School conducted by the Ohio Military Academy. The helmet liner is painted black with three gold stripes. The insignia of the infantry school is on one side and second lieutenant insignia is pinned on the front. TAC officers have traditionally worn black headgear to easily identify their role and authority during training.

🗓 ON THIS DAY//OCTOBER 1, 1987: The 137th Aviation Regiment is constituted in the Ohio Army National Guard. Flying the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter, the unit has mobilized to Kosovo and has deployed multiple times to Southwest Asia. In 2009 and 2015, the 1st Battalion earned the Meritorious Unit Commendation for service in Iraq. In this November 2004 photo, a UH-60 Black Hawk from the 1st Battalion, 137th Aviation prepares to land at Camp Bondsteel, Kosovo after returning from a mission.
