This is the head of a full-grooved axe from the Archaic Culture Period (roughly 1000-800 b.c.). This axe was mainly used for chopping trees or wood-working by Native Americans.

These artifacts, a saber and telescope, belonged to Gideon Pillow. Pillow was a close friend of President Polk and General of U.S. volunteers during the Mexican American War. The ornate sword, made out of gold, silver, and steel would have been by Pillow's side throughout the war.

James K. Polk and Andrew Jackson were such close friends that Polk received a nickname inspired by Jackson's own nickname. While Jackson was Old Hickory, Polk became Young Hickory. Jackson also sent Polk a piece of his hair in the mail as a sign of their friendship. Whoever you're thinking of this International Day of Friendship, consider sending them a present. Maybe one that's a little less hairy!

Our new exhibit is opening tomorrow, July 3 with a free event for the whole family. Join us from 4:00-8:00pm for a special viewing of the exhibit, refreshments, crafts and a live reading of the Declaration of Independence at 6:00pm.

Our first summer camp is in the books and was so much fun! These campers researched and installed a timeline exhibit at the Sister's House visitor's center. There are still limited spots available in our July summer camps!
