Celebrating Student Creativity at the Colonial Beach Museum!

Art Walk is bringing fresh perspectives into the Colonial Beach Museum, and we are so grateful to the students and teachers helping make it happen!

A heartfelt thank-you goes to Mr. Whitman, Photography Teacher, and Dr. Jem Tanucan, Art Teacher, at Colonial Beach High School, for lending us their students’ artwork and photography. Sharing these pieces gives our community an opportunity to celebrate the creativity, talent, and unique perspectives of our local students.

To the student artists and photographers: thank you for sharing your work with us! We are proud to display your creations and give museum visitors a chance to see Colonial Beach through your eyes.

We love seeing Art Walk grow and welcome more people into the museum. Each visit offers an opportunity to support our students while also discovering the history of Colonial Beach. Bringing student creativity into a space dedicated to our town’s past makes for a wonderful connection between generations.

Thank you to everyone who visits, encourages our young artists, and helps make the museum a place for learning, creativity, and community. We look forward to continuing to grow together!

The holidays are coming to Colonial Beach, and one of our most cherished traditions is returning! Join the Colonial Beach Historical Society & Museum for the 24th Annual Colonial Beach Whitestone Christmas Home Tour on Saturday, December 12th & Sunday, December 13th, 2026.

Step inside beautifully decorated Colonial Beach homes and experience the warmth, hospitality, history, and holiday spirit of our community. This special annual tradition is held in honor of Betty Whitestone, whose dedication helped make the Christmas Home Tour a beloved part of the holiday season in Colonial Beach.

Tickets are $25 each day
Tickets go on sale October 15th

THANK YOU, COLONIAL BEACH!

What an incredible day! On behalf of the Colonial Beach Historical Society & Museum Team, we want to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who came out for our 1st Annual Watermen’s Festival, honoring the hardworking Watermen who are such an important part of our community, history, and heritage.

Our community truly showed up! Seeing so many people come together to celebrate and support our Watermen meant more to us than we can say. From the conversations and stories to the demonstrations and wonderful feedback, we believe our first festival made an impact — and you’ve already got us excited about making it even bigger next year!

A very special thank you to Denson's Chesapeake Bay Farm to Table Catering, Colonial Beach Brewing and Nothing Bundt Cakes for providing the delicious food and drinks that helped make the day so special.

Thank you to the Virginia Waterman's Association for joining us and providing live demonstrations that gave our guests an up-close look at the skills, traditions, and work of Virginia’s Watermen.

CAVE ART THROUGH STUDENT EYES
What stories would you leave behind on the walls of a cave?
For this project, our CBHS student artists stepped back in time and imagined what life and art may have looked like thousands of years ago. Inspired by prehistoric cave art, students created their own interpretations of the animals, symbols, stories, and scenes that early people may have painted on cave walls.
Their artwork beautifully connects history, imagination, and artistic expression—giving an ancient form of storytelling a modern student perspective.

The park asked us to share their free public lecture titled "George Washington's Forgotten Friend: The French Nobleman Who Helped Win American Independence" on August 29, 2026, at 1:00 PM at the Log House in the George Washington Birthplace National Monument.

Rosemary Mahan, former Director of the Westmoreland County Museum, recently shared her knowledge and experience with the Colonial Beach Historical Society & Museum through an engaging presentation titled “Genealogy 101.” Mahan introduced attendees to the fundamentals of researching family history, offering helpful guidance on how to begin tracing family roots, locate historical records, and make use of local resources. Drawing on her extensive background in history and museum work, she provided practical tips for uncovering the stories behind names, dates, and documents. The program offered both beginning and experienced researchers useful tools for exploring their ancestry and preserving their family histories for future generations.
