October Featured Artist: Rita Kovach — Painting the Moment
The Artists’ Alliance of Colonial Beach is pleased to present Rita Kovach as our October Featured Artist. Join us for the opening of her exhibit on Friday, October 2, from 6–9 PM, during the Colonial Beach Art Walk.

Throughout her career as a student, art teacher, and working artist, Rita has been drawn to Impressionism and its ability to capture not simply what a place looks like, but how it feels in a particular moment. She finds inspiration in Impressionist painters such as Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, and Vincent van Gogh, whose expressive brushwork and use of color transformed everyday scenes into experiences filled with light, atmosphere, and movement.

That same desire to capture a fleeting sensation is at the heart of Rita’s own work.
Her paintings are lively and expressive, using energetic brushstrokes and vibrant color to convey the mood of her subjects. From expansive waters and autumn landscapes to wildlife and more intimate, whimsical subjects, Rita approaches each painting with an eye toward the feeling of the scene rather than a strictly literal interpretation.
“I too want to capture the sensation of the moment on canvas and share it with others.” — Rita Kovach

Her years as an art teacher have also shaped the way she sees the world. Teaching encourages careful observation—looking at color, light, shape, movement, and the small details that might otherwise go unnoticed. Rita brings that attentive eye to her own studio practice, creating paintings that invite viewers to pause and experience the moment along with her.
The works featured in this October exhibition reflect her affection for nature, changing seasons, wildlife, water, and the beauty found in everyday surroundings. Together, they offer a colorful and personal interpretation of the Impressionist tradition.

On Friday, September 11, the Artists’ Alliance at Jarrett Thor Fine Arts celebrated the opening of its Artist of the Month exhibition featuring Kathryn Murray. The evening brought together artists, collectors, friends, and members of the community for a lively reception showcasing an exciting new chapter in Murray’s artistic journey.

Kathryn’s newest body of work marks a notable departure from much of her previous work. Moving fluidly between abstraction, whimsical interpretations of landscapes, and expressive florals, the collection reveals a renewed sense of energy, curiosity, and experimentation.

Inspired in part by two artists she has been studying, Murray explores new approaches to color, form, texture, and composition. Layers of color and expressive mark-making invite viewers to look beyond literal representation and experience each work through mood, movement, and imagination.

The September 11 opening offered guests an opportunity to experience this evolution firsthand and to celebrate Kathryn Murray as the Artists’ Alliance Artist of the Month at Jarrett Thor Fine Arts. The exhibition reflects both the confidence of an established artist and the excitement of an artist continuing to explore, experiment, and discover new possibilities in her work.
