What happens when the war is over, but the experience doesn’t stay behind?

War Comes Home explores the deeply personal experiences of service members and their families as they return from deployment. Through historic and contemporary letters, the exhibit shares stories of grief, joy, doubt, love, and the challenges of adjusting to civilian life.

These personal words offer an intimate look at the lasting impact of war, not just on those who serve, but on the families and communities waiting for them at home.

Join us on September 9th as we hear from Tom Richards.
Over the past 125 years, the lakes near the Rathdrum Aquifer have been transformed by human intervention. Tom Richards will trace the impacts of dikes, dynamite, and mill ponds to their ultimate end in landmark court decisions and modern conservation efforts. Join us to better understand our evolving relationship with water levels at Spirit Lake and Hayden Lake, as we explore Honeysuckle Bay, Brickle Creek and local conservation efforts.

Nighttime cemetery tours are back this fall with our two most popular themes: Murders and Outlaws.

Murders — Explore the stories of those whose lives ended in tragedy and the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

Outlaws — Meet the lawbreakers, fugitives, and notorious characters who became part of North Idaho history.

Explore some of North Idaho’s most fascinating history with our fall Cemetery Tours. This season, we’re uncovering the stories of those whose lives and deaths left a mark on our community.

We’re also looking for wartime letters, stories and photographs to help bring these personal stories to life.

If you have letters written by or to service members, wartime photographs, or other images connected to veterans who lived in Kootenai, Benewah, or Shoshone County during their wartime service, we would love to hear from you. These materials offer a personal glimpse into the experiences of those who served and the families and communities waiting for them at home.

Letters and photos may be shared for potential inclusion in the exhibit.

Questionnaires may be submitted anonymously if preferred and are due by August 26th. Responses may be quoted or summarized in the exhibit to help tell the personal stories behind wartime service.
