The newly renovated Horn Shelter Exhibit. Fi****ms Collection with guns dating from the 1750s to the modern era. Norwegian Collection which is one of the largest repositories of Norwegian artifacts and books. Medical History featuring artifacts used by the first physicians in Bosque County. Primitive Furniture with examples of early furniture made in Bosque County. Education Gallery with books, photos, etc. from early schools/colleges in Bosque County.

Did you know Dolly Parton is one of the artists in our Lomax Legacy exhibit? She sang In The Pines (Where Did You Sleep Last Night) on her variety show in the 1970s, and a live recording of the song finally made it on her 1994 album Heartsongs: Live From Home.

John A. Lomax recorded Huddie Leadbetter singing the song, and that recording is often credited with the song's resurgence.

Come listen to both versions of Into the Pines and two other folk songs that Lomax helped preserve. The Museum is open Thursday - Saturday, 10 am - 5 pm; Sunday 12 pm - 5 pm.

Welcome Back to School, Bosque County!!

We went back to school a few days early and did our homework to find these photos of school days gone by in our archives.

🍎 Meridian Creek School in the late 1910s. OVER 100 years ago 🤯

✏ Mustang School in Bosque County. The date is completely unknown, but based on haircuts and fashion, we can estimate this to be from sometime in the 1930s.

⚾Fall feels like a particularly sporty time of year, so here's a picture of the Clifton High School Baseball team. Yes, we get that baseball is traditionally a spring sport, but this picture is so great we couldn't help but include it.

As we are RAPIDLY approaching another school year, it's time to look back. This summer, we had an influx of incredibly helpful teen volunteers!! They helped with just about every part of our museum. From Summer Camps to Collections to Reception to Administrative help, they have been so incredibly helpful!

This summer, our teens volunteered 162.25 hours! According to IndependentSector.org, volunteer time is currently valued at $36.14/hour. If you do the math, that means that these young folks contributed an equivalent of $5,782!

They helped our operating funds go farther and helped us preserve Bosque County's history for future generations, like them!

P.S. - Adult Volunteers, including our Docents, y'all are still fantastic and equally beloved! Check out our socials next Thursday for a somewhat relevant post 😉

A New Deal for Bosque County is done, but don't fear. Our next Temporary Gallery exhibit is right around the corner!

When Bosque County was formed, Lowry H. Scrutchfield helped with the original surveying work and was one of the first county commissioners. Later that year, he was elected the first judge of Bosque County. Two generations later, his grandson Lowry Scrutchfield Lewis was elected Bosque County Sheriff for an unprecedented four terms. This exhibit examines their family through objects and through the legacy of their commitment to Bosque County.

This exhibit opens August 20th - come check it out!

Summer Camp wrapped up last week!! We had SO much fun with our activities, we didn't remember to take enough pictures! Take a look at what we managed to sneak a pic of.

post!! Our fantastic volunteers have added to the Museum in so many different ways. Through their smiling presence at events, though making cookies for lectures, and for raising money for our Brand New Icemaker!!!!!!!!

No more hauling in bags of ice for events. No more remembering to turn the Icemaker off, lest it fill the freezer with ice. Just lots of cool ice for the Museum now.

Let's take a trip into the archives! that archives are all of the papers that help us tell the story of Bosque County? No Horseshoes Allowed!

Today, we found this train ticket for the Missouri, Kansas, Texas Railway in 1917. We love that on the back, "Elma's first ticket on train. July, 16, 1917" was written.

The Missouri, Kansas, Texas Railway (also known as the MKT, or just Katy for short). The Katy was the first railroad to connect Texas via a northern route. It embraced this role and called itself the "Gateway to Texas". In the late 1800's, they began acquiring other smaller lines, and by January 1, 1904 the MKT owned 1,119.3 miles of rail in Texas! The Katy continued to thrive during World War II, but shortly thereafter began to decline. After several restructuring attempts, on December 1, 1989, the Union Pacific's subsidiary, Missouri Pacific, bought out the Katy.

It's Summertime, which means we make a special place for youngsters at the museum with our STEM on the Frontier! Campers investigated how pioneers used concepts from Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Each day of camp focused on a different group of folks.

Pictured are some of the highlights:

🍃We learned about Poison Ivy and went on a hunt for 3 leafed plants. We didn't find any!
🕵🏻‍♂️Each day, we went to a different gallery in the museum with a different mission we had to find/figure out
🌻We went on a pollen hunt after learning about pollination. We did find pollen!
🧊We tried to create an ice cube safe that would keep our ice cube around for as long as possible before we learned about iceboxes
😋We made 3️⃣ different kinds of cabins! Everyone's favorite used pretzels & fluff
🧼 After learning about the pH scale, we made our own soap, tested it, and then carved a brand new bar
🌦️We learned about pioneer weather forecasting and even made our own weathervanes and barometers

It was So Much Fun! Interested in getting your young ones into this much fun? Our second session of camp starts up in TEN Days!
