Meet Lydia Maier, who will be performing an organ concert at the Union Sunday School on September 27th.

Lydia Maier, a native of Madison, Wisconsin, is currently in her junior year of Organ Performance studies at the University of Iowa under Dr. Gregory Hand. She started her studies in 2021 with Andrew Kreigh, continuing with Bruce Bengtson, and has since been shaped by her travels to study and play historic organs across Germany. At the University of Iowa, Lydia serves as the Social Media Coordinator for the Organ Studio and is currently developing a collegiate honors recital. She is an active member of the American Guild of Organists (AGO) and the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM), where she also serves as the Social Media Coordinator for the Iowa chapter. Outside of music, Lydia enjoys caring for plants and cooking.

🚨IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT🚨
We will be CLOSED for tours on Tuesday, September 1st.
We need to shut off electricity to the site for the entire day and while a pre-1910 (when the house was electrified) experience may be fun we think it best we close for the day.

We were closed for two days this week due to some maintenance projects, and you may be wondering what we are up to, so here’s the scoop! Multiple projects started this week and will continue though fall.

We are getting a dehumidification system in the basement. Yay! This will help with continued moisture and humidity issues. However, because of this system we are having to enter the 21st century and update our electrical panel from screw in fuses to a more modern fuse box.

Many of our limestone pavers that create walkways around our buildings are deteriorating and are tripping hazards. These pavers are being replaced with new limestone pavers. This part of the project has not started yet.

We are getting new front porch columns! Unfortunately, parts of the current columns are rotted and deteriorated and require replacement.

We will keep you updated on any more needed closures or any other changes to our hours!

Happy National Dog Day! The Larrabee family had many dogs throughout the years, including hunting and farm dogs. We don't have occasssion to show dog pics very often, so please enjoy these furrier members of the Larrabee family.

Happy birthday to Mrs. Anna Matilda Larrabee who was born on this day in 1842! Anna Matilda Appelman moved to Clermont with her family in 1854 at the age of 12 where she helped out on the farm and as the oldest child of 8, helped raise and take care of her siblings. She was talented in piano, organ, and singing. At age 15 she returned to Connecticut to attend the Mystic Academy for girls.

She married William Larrabee in 1861 at the age of 19 and they set up home in Clermont. Throughout the years Mrs. Larrabee prided herself on maintaining households both in Des Moines and Clermont all while raising 7 children. She was active in the Ladies Aid Society of Clermont, was the superintendent of the Union Sunday School for 30 years, and was a volunteer for the American Red Cross.

Her and Mr. Larrabee spent years visiting and researching schools in order to someday build the “ideal school” Clermont. She oversaw the construction and decorating of the new school, and deeded it to the City of Clermont for use of the new public school in 1914.

Mrs. Larrabee helped to raise many of her 11 grandchildren, and lived to be 89 years old when she passed away in 1931. Here are photographs of her throughout her life.

Join us for our first concert of the season as we welcome Haleena Thompson, a Univeristy of Iowa organ performance student! Concert starts at 2:00 on August 16th at the Union Sunday School in Clermont.

Meet our organist who will be performing at the August 16th Organ Concert at the Union Sunday School:

Haleena Thompson is a young organist currently studying with Dr. Gregory Hand to earn her BM in Organ Performance. While attending the University of Iowa, she plays in many local recitals, organizes a continuo club, and is involved as a registrant helping Dr. Hand prepare the largely unperformed works of German Romantic composer Johanna Senfter, which will culminate in a recording project in Germany. Haleena is also interested in music theory, learning jazz piano, and writing scores for youth Scottish pipe bands. In the future, she is hoping to pursue graduate education and teach organ lessons in the community.

Join us on August 16th at 2:00pm at the Union Sunday School in Clermont to hear this talented young artist!

The Fayette County Fair week has arrived! Besides entering livestock competitions, some members of the Larrabee family entered their artwork. We have on display at Montauk three Fayette County Fair ribbons of Augusta Larrabee from 1895. All these pieces were entered into Division L and are described as follows:
1. Best sketch from nature
2. Fruit piece in oil
3. Painting from still life
Augusta was a talented artist and attended the Art Student’s League in New York City in the late 1880s.
