ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE: DANIELLE MYERS

Something is being built in The New Gallery, and you can be part of the process.

Nashville-based multidisciplinary artist, designer, writer, and maker Danielle Myers joins Austin Peay State University as the 2026–27 Artist-in-Residence, bringing her public-practice approach to campus through her exhibition "America, The Beautiful".

Selected through a public call open to artists within a 350-mile radius of Clarksville, Myers is spending her residency working alongside APSU students to develop an exhibition from the inside out. Her practice explores how art can move beyond traditional institutional spaces to create opportunities for reflection, participation, and community engagement.

Collaboration is at the heart of the residency. APSU students are working alongside Myers throughout the exhibition-making process—from layout and graphic design to fabrication, installation, publications, and programming.

Two projects take shape through this collaboration:
"Bound Together" — a large-scale screen installation constructed from paperclips.
"We Are Reflections (W.A.R.)" — a series of Mylar balloons created through a screen-printing workshop with APSU students.
This is not simply an exhibition to look at. It is an opportunity to experience how an exhibition is made. Through ideas, materials, collaboration, experimentation, and the people who bring it into being, everyone can contribute to the final installation in the gallery space.

NEXT WEDNESDAY: TIM JOHNSON

What does it take to turn an idea into an animated feature?
Join us Wednesday, October 7, for a special Visiting Artist Lecture with Tim Johnson, an accomplished animator, producer, and director with a career spanning more than four decades in animation.

Johnson is best known for directing and co-directing DreamWorks Animation features including "Antz", "Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas", "Over the Hedge", and "Home". He also served as an executive producer on "How to Train Your Dragon" and "Abominable". His career offers a fascinating perspective on the evolution of computer animation, from its early technological challenges to the collaborative, highly developed production environments of contemporary animated filmmaking.

"Your Left Brain Is a Nag"
Wednesday, October 7 | 4:00 p.m.
Heydel Hall, Art + Design Building, Room 120

Drawing on his 45-year career in animation, Johnson will share insights on developing a creative voice and moving beyond the internal critic that can interfere with creative thinking.

For students pursuing art, design, animation, film, or any creative discipline, this is an opportunity to hear directly from an artist who has spent his career translating ideas into stories, characters, images, and worlds.

Free and open to the public.

The Visiting Artist Lecture Series is generously underwritten by CECA and organized by the Department of Art + Design.

The third week of the fall semester is almost behind us, and what a start it has been!

We already have four successful events in the books, and we want to take a moment to thank everyone who has joined us so far.

A special THANK-YOU to everyone who came out for Cesar Rivera’s lecture on Wednesday evening, Thursday’s “Couching Sessions” with Cesar, and last night’s gallery talk. It has been wonderful to see our galleries filled with conversation, curiosity, and, most importantly, student engagement.

Seeing the enthusiasm and interest our students bring to the Art + Design Department’s programming is truly energizing. We are grateful to our students, faculty, guests, and community for making these events such a vibrant part of the semester.

And we are just getting started. More exhibitions, lectures, conversations, and opportunities to connect are ahead!

Thank you for being part of it.

The Department of Art + Design at Austin Peay State University is pleased to welcome Cesar Rivera as the first guest of the Fall 2026 Visiting Artist Lecture Series, generously underwritten by the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts (CECA).

He also served on the National Board of Directors of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA).

For his lecture, “ADD: AI’s Deficit Disorder: Emerging Technologies from Gutenberg to GenAI,” Rivera will examine disruptive technologies throughout design history, from the invention of the printing press to contemporary generative AI and large language models, and consider what current data may reveal about the future of design work and work environments. A Q&A will follow.

Behind the scenes, important work is happening to preserve and celebrate the Austin Peay State University Permanent Collection.

The Hazel Smith Summer Research Fellowship recipient, Naomi Hundt, alongside the Gallery Director, Jaroslava Prihodova, continues to make significant progress in accessioning and documenting artwork in the APSU Permanent Collection. More than 400 additional works have been added to the digital archive, expanding access to the University's growing collection.

The work continues with image editing and a campus-wide inventory scheduled for the coming weeks, ensuring the collection remains well-documented and accessible to students, faculty, researchers, and the community.
