Summer time feels like a beginning.

In our current exhibition, photographer Magdalena Wosinska brings us directly into her world( one built on connection, skateboarding culture, and heavy metal. Originally from Eastern Europe, Wosinska uses her lens to bridge the space between artist, subject, and viewer.

On this week’s episode of Art History Thursday we are highlighting the impact of local artist, Robert O’Neal.

Robert’s legacy isn’t just that he was a talented artist. Robert actively sought to improve the lives of those in his community by bringing people together through art. Robert formed groups that documented and celebrated Black communities and excellence in Cincinnati.

His work to build an inclusive arts community resulted in the creation of the Arts Consortium of Cincinnati, his moniker as the Unofficial Mayor of Over the Rhine, and ultimately the preservation of the Regal Theater in the West End to form the Robert O’Neal Multicultural Arts Center, which preserves the work of African and African American artists in the region.

Robert’s life illustrates the importance of civic engagement and how the arts play a vital role in bringing people together to celebrate the cultures and lived experiences within their community.

On this week’s Art History Thursday we are discussing Lilly Martin Spencer whose progressive values and work ethic changed public perception of 19th century female artists.

As her family’s primary breadwinner through her artistic practice Lilly changed how the world viewed female artists. Her paintings often featured women and children in domestic life, but she portrayed her subjects in such a way that their affection for their family and perseverance was palpable. An early feminist, Lilly paved the way for future female artists.
