You are invited to ANDERSONVILLE ARTS WEEKEND's First Free Sanctuary exhibition featuring noted Chicago artist SUSAN HALL. It is powerful and beautiful work. The opening party/reception is Friday Sept 25 at the huge FIRST FREE church sanctuary, corner of Ashland and Berwyn, 5255 N Ashland. Opening Friday Sept 25, 6-9pm. This Saturday March 14th, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., Addington Gallery will be participating in the River North gallery walk. We are opening a fantastic new exhibition, "Learn to Love", new mixed media work by Teresa James. We hope you can join us. Meet The artist, refreshments served! While still referencing the materials and techniques of her printmaking background, Teresa's current works are the result of a variety of techniques. She begins by adapting and repurposing historic impressions of maps, animals, and nature, layering and collaging them onto a variety of vintage book covers. The resulting geometric compositions provide a weathered, narritive field, a dimensional receptive site for her imagined, hand drawn figurative imagery.

Artist Misha Goro will discuss his current exhibition and gallery artist Jeff Hirst will talk about his residency at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation in Co Mayo, Ireland. This year we have curated a very striking exhibition at First Free Church on Ashland and Berwyn featuring the powerful yet delicate paintings of Ellen Holtzblatt. Addington Gallery, Inc is tremendously excited to be hosting a powerful exhibition of new paintings on aluminum by Chicago artist Misha Goro. Public reception is this Friday Sept 12 5-8pm, the artist will be present, refreshments will be served, and YOU are invited! These striking works speak with authority and commitment about the urban experience. Misha eschews the attractive landmarks, and gets down under the tracks, on the bridges, over the gutters, through the traffic. The paintings emerge from an authentic, lived experience and are shaped by an acute understanding of light, space, and atmosphere. I once heard an artist describe these works as "paintings with velocity". You see it on the surface: paint applied with squeegees, old credit cards, rollers, and rags by a hand that is both assured and always seeking. Addington Gallery, 704 N Wells, Chicago. This Friday, 6-8pm, we are holding a closing reception for Artist Jane Michalski and her beautiful one person show in the sanctuary of First Free Church Andersonville 5255 N Ashland Ave, Chicago, IL. I can't say enough about this show of large scale encaustic work, and the venue itself. I've been curating exhibitions here for years, and this one is a real standout. This is a last chance to see the show. I hope you can come out and support Jane as she talks about this new, powerful work

Much of my day is often spent talking about the fantastic artists we represent at Addington Gallery. But on some occasions, I am asked to talk about my own work. This is one of those occasions. I will be discussing my own paintings this coming Monday at an event called “Meet a Chicago Artist” at "4th Pres" on Michigan Ave on the Mag Mile.

Fourth Presbyterian is a beautiful cathedral with a lovely cloistered courtyard. They also produce art exhibitions and programs on the arts. My talk takes place Monday, April 28th at 3:00 p.m. Room 4E. Please use the entrance at 126 E. Chestnut and sign in with reception when you arrive. It is open to the public and free, but they ask that you register ahead of time. Use the email or number at the bottom of this post.

This is a large encaustic painting by Cat Crotchet, on view now at the gallery. In recent large scale work, Cat dissects bits of decorative patterns from various cultural sources, zooms in, and leans into the highly physical, tactile process of encaustic painting to arrive at powerful imagery that plots its own route between abstraction and representational imagery. Calling our attention both to the natural world, and to humankind's creative impulse to stylize that world in order to say things about our inner life, Cat's paintings chart a unique course in contemporary painting, with feet firmly planted in art history.

Just a couple weeks left to see our amazing current show featuring encaustic work by Rebecca Stahr and cold wax paintings by Joan Geary.

These works are by Joan Geary. Joan works mainly in oil and cold wax, a medium that allows for the buildup of a rich history and patina through amassing layers of paint and excavation back through those layers. Luminosity and light have become trademarks of her work, which explores color and shape inspired by nature and God. Her work has been featured in numerous venues throughout the Midwest, as well as publications such as The Chicago Tribune, The Doings, and a book titled Cold Wax Medium: Techniques, Concepts, and Conversations by Rebecca Crowell and Jerry McLaughlin.

Just a couple weeks left to see our amazing current show featuring encaustic work by Rebecca Stahr and cold wax paintings by Joan Geary.

These works are by Rebecca. Her recent encaustic paintings merge an interest in process and the encaustic medium with an organic, almost three dimensional approach to developing a composition. Images that seem to reference nature are the accumulation of thousands of little points of pigmented wax applied in layers. The image seems to simultaneously form and dissolve, and speaks to the mutable and atomically fractured nature of our physical environment. With a technique that recalls the repetitive creation of weaving and textiles, Stahr creates images that can be read both as surface and image.

Says Rebecca about her work: "My paintings often feel like imagined emotional inner landscapes. They are born out of a larger contemplative practice rooted in experiencing the sacred connectedness in our natural world, the beauty of impermanence and the cycles of life and nature. The paintings becomes a record of that journey and as well as a path of healing and deeper understanding of the beauty of humanity's imperfection.
