Czech born artist Marketa Sivek has been living and working in Chicago for over 20 years. Established as one of the leading artists in the community, her work has been featured in Elle Decor, American Art Collector, Fine Art Connoisseur and other publications, as well as featured on the Rachael Ray Show and national television. Ms. Sivek has numerous private and corporate collectors in the U.S., England, Australia, the Nordic countries and elsewhere, and is part of the private collection of both Oprah Winfrey and Tom Hamilton of Aerosmith. The narrative of Ms. Sivek's multifaceted work is deeply rooted in her childhood. Growing up in the authoritarian regime of communist Czechoslovakia, the desire for color, and lots of it, tells a story. Amidst grey apartment buildings where the color was sparse and sense of safety absent, Marketa employs structures and houses as a recurring theme in her work - a metaphor for a shelter as well as circumstances that can change suddenly. Lost in the infinity of the vast sky as clear as sapphire, grounded by a moon or planet, the complexity meets simplicity when the heavy layers of paint are united in harmony with finely graded brushstrokes. In Ms. Sivek's abstract works, sensational pools of color, raw and thick - some mixed directly onto the canvas - command immediacy and often instigate the urge for a nearly edible experience. Enthralling and inspiring, Marketa Sivek's work can be as light and sweet as cotton candy and as deep and profound as a shadow of melancholy during the flight of time. Just as life itself.

So l, today I spent all day organizing my storage and ever so messy workspace, the task I go through when I can’t find what I am looking for .. which is pretty much all the time. Surrounded by boxes of canvases, dozens of jars with brushes, work finished and unfinished, magazines, paint tubes, books, notes ( you name it, I save everything) I thought it couldn’t get any worse. Ha, I was wrong! — I managed to break a light fixture while on the ladder dragging a giant box of shipping material to the top shelf, and subsequently got hit on the head several times by a sheet of unruly 4x8 foam board. However ... then I walked home and found this beautiful bouquet from my dear friends Katrin and Dave delivered by the front door AND 5 cases of Tannat with my label on it, courtesy of @imagerywinery (what a timing!) THANK YOU! The day just got better, and yes — Happy Birthday to me, it’s today and it’s not over yet!

I brought my computer home the other day and after painting all day today at the gallery , I’ve worked on some writings at home for a few hours. One manhattan and a glass of red wine later I look up at the sky and ... it was still blue! Seriously I thought it was close to midnight... Cooper and I watching snow. Cooper is an albino raccoon named after Anderson Cooper. He is as cute as Anderson and if he could, I bet he’d giggle just like Anderson. We saved him from a taxidermy store where he was sitting in the window for months locked in a glass case. He can hold flowers in his paws, American flag on 4th of July and sometimes our phones when we are on FaceTime. Today I wish Cooper was alive.

How to make social distancing social without Lori Lightfoot showing up at your doorstep lol ... The wild life wasn’t exactly happy about our little party. Got an evil eye from a squirrel comfortably sitting in the tree 2’ away who didn’t flinch at our presence ( in fact I think she was waiting for us to leave) and clearly this flustered pigeon pretty much owns our friends’ wall now. Noted. These guys were having none of it. I can say for sure they don’t expect us to be back ever. I get it... And then we took a walk and ran into a dinosaur whose outfit I highly recommend to ALL. Perhaps the numbers would start dropping if we all hopped around in a dinosaur costumes.? (Yes, it did have a plastic shield :)

The only thing I had strength to do after a run to Whole Foods on Halsted today — where surprisingly nobody took count of many people they let inside nor cared about the fact that people were herding by the registers not caring about the 6’ distance marks on the floor — was to make this manhattan.
